I have a problem I can't find an answer to. I have Windows Vista Ultimate, I believe after I ran the Windows Cleanup tool on my C:\ drive I don't rember all the options I selected, when I tried to restart Windows It fails, with an error message saying "Boot Critical File c:\windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys is corrupt" and a message to boot from the install disk and do a repair. My ystem is DIY, Asus P5B Premium Vista Edition motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40GHz cpu, 2048MD DDR2 800MHz ram, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB Serial ATA-300 Hard Drive. OK so I tried booting off the Vista install dvd and select the "Repair Automtically" option and get the message after it tries "Windows cannot Repair this computer automatically" It seems to me a simple replace of the corruptfile intelide.sys file should not be so hard? I then tried to select start from a restore point but there where none, and last known success full startup option this fails. Now I have a system with important files on it and know way to repair it, or access it, I can't believe some thing that is not that "messed up" to me I can't find a solution to. I tried for a week now, any Ideas or suggestions are much needed. Thanks Ralph

That's a bit of a tough one...
Firstly, if you need that data, what I would do is get the hard drive out and set it as a slave device in another pc and copy over anything you need (better to be safe than sorry!). Also, if you manage to do that, it might pay to see if you can find the same version of that file and copy it to the system32\drivers folder manually - flick it back in your original machine and give it a whirl...

If the repair option didn't work, that could be because windows has detected some bad sectors on your hard drive - it is possible, I had a drive die 6 hours after pulling it from it's anti-static bag! What you can do is find a drive testing utility for your make/model and run some diagnostics on it.
See what that uncovers - if it does find some bad sectors, it may explain why Vista cannot fix the problem...

related to DVD readers/burners

boot with your Vista CD and do a repair.

It will find it and put it back.

I suggest that you copy the driver for future reference.
