Works 8 has Word .doc documents in its Open list, just verified it could open one.
Wordpad should open .doc files.
If you don't need Office very often you might download then install the free OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org, it can handle .doc and .xls files.
Save one of the attachments to your Desktop, right-click it and choose Open With... then scroll to the Works entry. Click on it to open. If you want to set it as the default be sure to put a checkmark in the box at bottom right.
By the way, that's not an Operating System question but is for the Software or Microsoft Office section. Works and Office do not automatically come with Windows but Works is frequently bundled with a new computer.
