refdb.dat - manual db update

Is is possible to manually use this file to update SD 4.1.0.1 ????

According to what i've read it should reside in c:\programfiles\spywaredoctor
but I can't see it, even with hidden files turned off.

I have a laptop that has 4.1 SD installed but isnt up to date, but everytime it connects to the internet the machine lasts a few seconds before rebooting.

I used SD to remove what it found first time but I think there is still more stuff on it.

Please try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking to update Spyware Doctor by restarting your computer, repeatedly tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Select Safe Mode with Networking and proceed (it is normal for startup to be very slow). Log in with your usual password.

Yeah, already tried that one.

PC rebooted after about 2mins of seeing the desktop.

PC is connected to internet via USB wireless that had been working for 6 months or so.

No built in ethernet or wireless - hence the need to manually update the DB.

So you are saying that your computer reboots automatically after about 2mins?

If that is the case, please try to do the following:
Download Hijack This (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe)

Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

also could you press F8 while starting up and when the options appear select "desable automatic restart to protect system files" (or something like that) and press enter

also when you have done that could you unplug all usb devices, printers ect. (basically anything not needed for your computer to run) and see if that prevents the restarts

it could be possable that the cleanup could have upset your systems configuration:(

i have attached 2 tools which might help

first could you try running shutdown logger (in safemode) and post the logfile it will on your desktop

next could you try starting up in normal mode your computer restarts and post the log it creates (it may allow you to start in normal mode to update)

Without wanting to sound ungrateful...........

I don't have access to this PC at the moment so I was trying to get the user to copy the refdb.dat file to the local disk via a floppy or memory stick I can send in the post.

They aren't going to be able to do anything more than that :(

So, back to my original question which is - where does this file reside as I cannot see it in c:\program files\spyware doctor.

try creating a AOSS disk (in labs) and sending that

yup - thats the other idea.

I STILL need that file for an up to date database as I've already run the basic scan from the install I got down and sent.
