SD false positive of SpywareGuard

Spyware Doctor is now reporting SpywareGuard as malware, specifically misidentifying it as 'Rogue Antispyware BPS_Spyware'. A total of 60 infections are reported, including registry keys and the Program Files SpywareGuard.

I also get a SD popup in the system tray at startup saying that it has blocked a startup program, which I assume must be SpywareGuard also.

I run SD 5.0.1.205, database 5.07920.

This case definitely appears to be a false positive. SpywareGuard is a reputable program (as is a related application, SpywareBlaster).

Could you please supply me with the database version and product version of SpywareGuard and i will look into this.

The SpywareGuard version is 2.2.0. The definition file is 1/22/04 (sic). This particular AS app is heuristic based, so it does not rely on the typical AS definition/signature/fingerprint/etc. files for protection. It is not a scanner.

For those unfamiliar with it, SG is a product of Javacool www.javacoolsoftware.com . I do not rely heavily on it for protection, but I have kept it on my system, and once in a while it will pop up with something.

I am having the same problem regarding detecting Spyware Guard as an infection.

Now, when I log on, a Spyware Guard error message pops up repeatedly to tell me the file definitions have been corrupted, and when I try to open Spyware Guard it says the shortcut is missing.

Did you allow Spyware Doctor to quarantine the 'infection'? If so, it might have deleted the definitions, shortcuts, etc. As I noted, SD found 60 items on my computer, all of which I assume were related to SpywareGuard. I did not allow SD to remove them.

The good news for you is that after this problem gets sorted out, you can of course download a fully functional SpywareGuard again as a free application. Hopefully whatever is still left of it on your system now can be completely removed via the uninstall process. If not, you may have a little more work to do before you can reinstall.

There is also System Restore if you have XP or Vista. Try rolling back your system to before the SD problem occurred, and don't allow SD to remove anything that looks like SpywareGuard until this issue is cleared up.

Alternatively, do without SpywareGuard for now.
