Block downloading certain file types

I need to block downloading cetain file type or to only allow a few certain file types like XLS, DOC.

Is this possible from the client side?

you could do it with IE's built in site blocker or better any other blocker

Thanks for your reply I tried that method and all it seemed to do was ask me for a password every time I visited any site.

Isnt this what you would use to block certain sites and not the downloading of certain file types?
