Win98 freezes at the "Windows is shuting down scrren". It doesn't go on to the normal, "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen. I usually wait a minute or so and turn off the power. Start up works fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are using SE better get the shut down patch on the Microsoft site.

What is the name I would look for to get the patch? Is SE short for Second Edition? If so then I do have SE. Can you tell I'm a not a techie?

If you're using Win98 Second edition (4.10.2222A), here's a link to the Shutdown Supplement:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp

If its installed and not working correctly,

Fast Shutdown registry key is enabled.

The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is unchecked in Windows 98 Second Edition, your system may reboot instead of shutting down.

To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown

NOTE: When you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, which addresses shutdown issues, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.

In Win98 First Edition (4.10.1998), go to Start>Run, type msconfig, click the Advanced button and check Disable Fast Shutdown.

Hi, The various shutdown patches didn't seem to work for me too well. A sure method that I use now is: Click on Start, then Shutdown, then Restart in MS-DOS mode, then OK. In a bit you'll see a black screen with the last DOS entry being C:\>Windows or somehing like that. Hit the space bar and type cd c:\ and then hit Enter. The c prompt (C:\) will come up. Hit your computers' on/off switch and you've got a clean shutdown. - Keep Smilin!
