I found out today that spyware doctor renewed itself without my consent and took my money. I really do not want this program because all its done so far is crash/slow my computer. Can someone tell me why it renewed itself and took my money all by itself without any consent from me? I find this highly unfair. Can anyone tell me how to stop this?

It is quite amazing that this keeps on popping up at the forum. Time to re-post my letter to Element 5 and theur answer.
If PC Tools can not follow the 'rules' I really hope someone in the situation takes a leagal punch at them soon!!!!!!

From what I can see, you can also cancel the auto renewal process here http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48180. If you need a refund, probably best to PM AChen or Support or send in a ticket to PC Tools Support :D

i think autorenew would be better replaced by a simple YES NO popup (with the cost ect. on) which appears when your licence is up

yes i had the same problem with auto renew with registry mechanic, get an email telling me to update subscription & next minute I get another email, thank you for your order. Never had this problem on any other year.
Even when swd came up for renewal a few months ago this didn't happen.
I have a few auto renewals with other companies one being microsoft & they advise you that your subscription will expire on a certain date & ask you to validate your card details to make sure your details are current.
I had to set up an account with pc tools to change it back to manual renewal. They responded very quickly & asked me if I wanted a refund of which I advised them no but voiced my opinion to them.
This situation could cause a few problems as based on their email, I could of just processed a payment & at the same time they could have charged my card. I actually consider it to be fraud to charge someone's card before they are notified.
After reading the above I checked my renewal options for my recently purchased Desktop Mechanic, and sure enough I found that the auto-renewal had been activated for this. I certainly do not recall opting for this when I made the initial purchase, or even being warned about it during purchase, though I guess I could have missed it.
Needless to say I have turned it off; I do not like the thought of a company just taking money out of my account without my prior knowledge or consent.

I don't remember actually being ASKED for autorenew. I had no knowledge of being asked for renewal AT ALL. And if I missed it because of a clever location for cancelling renewal that nobody would actually check for. My apologies :P

One thing I've been wondering - what happens if your card has expired or been cancelled when PCTools tries to automatically deduct money? Do they get in touch or just cancel your sub?

If the card has expired or canceled, then SD will not be automatically renewed.
Cheers,

Hi Chippa,
What I meant was - if for instance a customer had lost his credit card and had another one issued and didn't think to go to his PCT account to change the details before his sub. was due, would he/she be informed in any way or would his SD just suddenly stop working?

I think whoever decided on when to release V5, also handled the auto-renewal process...and that is not a good thing!
If I 'opt-out' of the auto-renewal process via email to customer service and receive confirmation I am set to 'manual', I shouldn't be receiving an email stating my subscription is running out and that I will be automatically charged, unless I change the option.
So I had to create an account, with very little user input and all my product information was displayed. If all this information was available/stored, why wasn't my setting for renewal???? IMO, this is ridiculous! So then I had to change the auto-renewal setting and confirm via email I wanted to do this. While all this was very easy to do, it is something I shouldn't have had to do in the first place.
SD was a good product (performance pig, but good removal), it still may become a good product, but the company itself in terms of business practices need to get their act together. It seems like there is a total disconnect between departments and gives the perception of incompetence.
