And here we go again.
Another update -another recall!
If I excuse??? Tired of the morons at PC Tools: NO I do not excuse.
This happends allmost everytime.
The quality department must be totally off the hook, or 'working' for the competition.
The SD5 have been a scandal from beginning -and we seems to be far from the end!
Don't this company understand they are making themself to a joke in the industry?
Try a bet on the bookmakers in London: what are the chances of a troublefree 'uppdate' from PC Tools. Those odds are non-excistent.
To all those who clap their hands and jump of joy for the good work performed by PC Tools, your standard of expectations and quality must be rather low.
6 months and still in uninstall and reinstall hell!!

Yes man. I know. It is quite annoying. But, my self, personally, I am ok. I have 2 pc. And, I have to unisntall and reinstall one of them, while, the other 1 is fine. So, one of my computer is working alrite. I tried that latest vesrion (something.258, i fogot). It works great. No lag at all:cool: . My pc is not slowing down and faster scan. I am not sure what is happening and why we have to uninstall and reinstall that one with Anti virus. but yea, it should be alrrite. Give them a bit more time dude.:o
I learnt it from my teacher "Anything happened, happened for reasons". :p

It is a pain but I think it's better they found the problem, admitted it and rolled-back than left it available. I think that's a more open approach than some other products I've used where you get stuck with a buggy upgrade and no way to go back ... PGP comes to mind.
My 2 cents.
BTW You must have been fast reorder, it was only available for such a short time I didn't get to update anyway!

I had an opportunity to download the latest version and from what I can say is this version was excellent. I have just uninstalled the new version and back to 5.0.1.205. Im really looking forward to the release of this new version again. Whatever it is these guys found, its great to see that they have taken it back and fixing it before releasing it again.
Again, good work guys :D

The new version seemed to be working fine for me but I've uninstalled it and gone back to the old one as instructed. It wasn't too much hassle and it's better to find out sooner, rather than when everything starts going wrong IMO.

'Give them a bit more time dude.'
So far I've given them roughly 6 months, and this kind of error happends allmost at every major up-date. The whoole mess of V5 was infact created by pre-release of something that should never had been released when it was.
'I learnt it from my teacher "Anything happened, happened for reasons". '
The only reason this happends over and over again is total lack of quality controle. The should replace whoever keeps on signing off theese releases premature long time ago!
Im going to leave the disaster version on and 'pass on the bill' if anything happends. Luckily I've got more PC's running, and NONE have been required to uninstall and re-install the security apps the last 12 months, and they get updated DAILY, not like PC Tools that think to believe malvare takes week-ends off!! There must be something seriously wrong with SD V5, if it may not be uppdated without completely uninstall and reinstall. Everyone knows what kind of mess that kind of activities leaves behind, nothing gets properly cleaned up!

Perhaps they should bring in some of the Registry Mechanic people to sort it out. I assume the developers of this product were recruited from Pinnacle when they were taken over by Avid, such is the quality of their work:rolleyes: .

Reodor, I understand what has happenned on you. It is frustated. Before I started to use Spyware Doctor, I used other programs as well. but, comparing with Spyware Doctor, Spyware Doctor is still much better. I am not defending Spyware Doctor. this is just the fact. :p
Differnt people may have differnt experience. So far, Spyware Doctor is good for me. For you, Spyware Doctor may have caused "some problems". In total you may have given them more than 6 months. What i meant was, just give them a bit more time to fix this version. I can feel .258 is good as I said, I tried it before. Accidently on the site, download it and tried it. I still got the setup file on my pc. :D
Hopefully, .258 is back soon, officially available and with no error. :)

If this version of SD was a coin or a stamp, I would be keeping it for posterity! LOL!!
However, I'm waiting on the new version after trialling many combinations of products. Using Ghost, I've been investigating a replacement for some heavy-duty (and BTW, this is NOT a good thing) applications: Zonealarm Pro and SAV Corp and settled on Norton Internet Security 2007 for XP and Kaspersky Internet Security 7 for Vista (I run a dual-boot).
I have to say that SD put Norton to shame when Kaspersky AV did a cross OS scan and picked up vbstub.exe and system.exe files in my XP System32 folder. I re-instated them and went back to check with Norton's AV scanner: NADA!
One intelli-scan with SD 5 found it. Easy!
Needless to say, I don't want to run XP without Spyware Doctor.
Looking forward to the new release...

Well I have to agree with Reodor, it is all a bit ridiculous this far down the line from the original release date of SD5 in March. If something was discovered that proved to be that serious that it led to the recall of this latest version, it should never have made release in the first place.
At least it was recalled quickly, which is what should have happened back in March when SD5 was unleashed to an unsuspecting general public in a Beta state.

Today I installed 5.0.5.258 version and I found two bugs:
1.SD engine uses during an immunization at startup 150MB!That's huge, man!
2.I installed both adds, just to noticed that they're not present on main window. And they don't work at all.
Maybe it's just me and my PC,but imagine the day (version) of Spyware Doctor v.5 without any bugs...

You are 100% right, it is the 'operator' at PC Tools releasing it.:D
Note I never said it did not 'work', it is at the moment just as slow and soggy, drags PF and memmory at start-up as it allways have, no immediate improvements discovered.
My reason for the post You find in the post heading!

You're not alone. I installed 5.0.5.258 and Site Guard but the add-on cannot be found in the On Guard Tools also.

Totally agree REODOR! SD5 creates hell at system boot up (task bar goes black - startup programmes disappear, etc!) - it conflicts with other AV software - IE7 takes an age to load (although once up and running there are no problems).
I've used SD for a while now and really am tempted to ask for my annual subscription fee back - does not do what it says on the tin!!!
My sister in law is an IP lawyer who deals with software companies in Scotland (and beyond)- she thinks this whole SD5 deal is shambolic and subscribers who are not happy with the product ask for a refund. I know the cost (££££) is not great - it is the principle of it (consumer protection laws cover this) plus I have spent hours of my time trying to upload - uninstall - reload SD5 (I would have been much cheaper - vis-a-vis the opportunity cost of my time - to bin SD totally and buy new AV software!!)
Don't get me wrong - I think SD is much better for PC security than many of its competitors - but that is of no use if you have to disable it in order to have your PC running at a reasonable speed!
Come on PCTools - get this sorted!! Patience & goodwill is running very low!
Michael Green, VP of product strategy at PC Tools is quoted as saying only a small percentage of customers had experienced problems with Spyware Doctor 5.0. He apologised for the inconvenience suffered but suggested that only 50 people were posting about issues with the product. "To date, there are just a small percentage of customers that have experienced problems with Spyware Doctor 5.0 – some of the comments on the forums have been very positive although we accept there are some issues. Overall, Spyware Doctor 5.0 sales have been up by 20 per cent on Spyware Doctor 4.0," http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/03/28/spyware_doctor_bugs/ (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/03/28/spyware_doctor_bugs/)
Come on Mr Green - just because they don't complain doesn't mean thay are not suffering in silence.......history is too full of assumptions such as that!!
Just one final observation before I get off my soap-box: with all these extra (satisfied) customers - surely PCTools can afford to refund me and other disgruntled customers the £25 (or however much it cost!) we paid for SD?

Typhoon & Jeff, thanks for the feedback regarding Site Guard and Email Guard - the reason why you were not able to install Site Guard and Email Guard is because the existing Site Guard and Email Guard is not compatible with build 2.0.5.258. Once we release this, I'll notify you about the Site Guard and Email Guard.

Hey Cutter, glad to hear I'm not the only one whose SD V5 works well. The latest version stayed on my PC for about three hours and ran perfectly before I checked in with the forum and found the orders to roll back. However, must admit I didn't try the add on guards as I use Sitehound and only online e-mail.

Hey swannie good to see your still about, I took the plunge in getting a new licence, I missed swd to much lol.
It's looking alot better no probs for a few weeks, cpu usage a bit but nothing to bad, looks like things are staring to get better, even though the new realise got recalled it looks as if a few of the extras are slowly going to be integrated back in which looks good.

I can't believe that some of you guys actually downloaded that thing without waiting a bit.
Don't you think that considering the history of SD5, updates should be downloaded with caution?

what exactly WAS wrong with .258
from what i heard it was one of the most stable releases yet
all i've heard about is the onguard incompatability and CPU hogging (which is apparently present in .255

There must have been a good reason to pull it so fast. Maybe at last they have employed some QA guys ;-P
