I have recently performed a clean install of Windows 2000 on my machine. This machine previously ran Windows 98.

When 98 was installed, I was able to achieve (at best) connection speeds of 45333kbps. This was with a very basic WinModem - a PCTel-based 56kFlex/v.90 modem.

However, after installing 2000, this modem no longer worked, even with the the driver for Windows 2000.

So, I stuck in an Ambient HaM (Host accelerated Modem) Data Fax. I also had the Windows2k drivers for this, (http://developer.intel.com) which I installed.

My highest achievable connection speed now is 33,600kbps. This with what I would consider to be a better modem (admittedly still not great).

I have tried to edit the ".inf" file and re-install to make it connect at nothing lower than 42,666kbps, to no avail.

I'm going to end up buying an external modem with a good reputation now, but in the meantime can anyone shed any light onto my problem, and possibly suggest a way to get a better throughput?

Also, does anyone know a way of changing the MTU setting in Windows2k because I reckon its connecting as if it was on a LAN. How do I set it to 576?

Cheers,

See the folder,

Performance\Network and Internet

in the Windows Registry Guide 3.0
