opera and spyware doctor

Hi,

I know this is considered an old and "resolved" issue, but I just recently upgraded to Spyware doctor version 5.0.1.205, and I noticed a slow-down when I try to download files in Opera, which is the browser that I use. I have used Spyware Doctor version 4 until now and that worked fine with Opera. Whenever I turn the Onguard protection off, or disable Spyware Doctor, Opera works just fine. (I use Opera 9.10.8697).

I have read the reported issues page and saw that the issue with Opera was considered closed. However, I find this slowdown irritating. I'm about to renew my license, but I am hesitant to do so if this problem cannot be resolved. Could anyone tell me if and how this can be fixed?

Perhaps the compatibility issues might be considdered solved, but the slow-down affects everyone running V5, some more - some less. Have a look in task manager and monitor the CPU, PF and memmory usage and You get the answer. There is a significant difference between V4/4.1 and V5.xxx.
But who knows, perhaps the next release will show some improvements.:confused:

to curb spyware doctors CPU usage you can use process tamer to set opera to run in realtime priority and sdsvc.exe to run in idle priority

that should solve any slowdown issues

Upgrade your opera to 9.22 build 8801 - the version you are using has security issues. Additionally, I use the captioned build and the most current release of SD 5.0.1.205 and have no problems.:eek:

None of these solve the issue of the slow start of a download in Opera. If Spyware Doctor is running and I download a file, Opera freezes for 3-8 seconds before starting the download. It is completely unresponsive! (Once it starts downloading, it downloads at the normal speed though.) If I shutdown Spyware Doctor, Opera does not freeze at all and starts the download immediately. This did not used to happen with SWD version 4.x. Any other ideas?

do you have the fraud protection ticked with opera - see preferences and security. Uncheck it if it checked. Absent that I have no idea. I don't have that problem. :)

No, I do not have fraud protection enabled, so that's not it. I'm deciding today whether to renew SWD: I have SWD running on both my computers. I do agree that SD is one of the better spyware removers and uses a little more resources then other products, but its something I'll stick with. Looking forward to the new version, which theres been some mention of in the forums. Does anyone know when this will be released?
Back to the issue with Opera - Have you installed the addons Site Guard and Email Guard? You can also isoloate the onguard tools to find the culprit and notify Pc Tools and keep this disabled in the meantime. This was an older issue and I have not seen any new reports on this for a while... although, some users do recieve similar issues with IE7.

No, I don't have the addons site guard and email guard installed. But I like the suggestion of playing around with disabling the different Onguard tools to see if I can find the culprite. Thanks...

I forgot, I have a copy of an email sent to me from PC Tools support in regard to customising Spyware Doctor. Thought I would share with all of you here. It had kinda help my computer to run a bit happier with Spyware Doctor so many it will help some of you too.

Here it is below.

First of all, can you make sure you have set all, if any, of your internet security software such as Windows Firewall/NOD32/Norton/ZoneAlarm/Mcafee/AVG firewall and antivirus, etc, to "allow Spyware Doctor" to run freely in their "whitelist" or "exception" settings?

You can also add those program executable files to Spyware Doctor Global Action List.
To add file 'processes' to the Global Action List, please follow these steps:

1. Open Spyware Doctor and select the 'Settings' button >> 'Global Action List'
2. Click the 'Add' button and the 'Add New Rule' box will appear
3. At the ' Select data type: ' dropdown box make sure you select "File on disk"
4. Browse for the 'executable file' (.exe file) that opens and runs the application in question

Any file added will then be ignored by all OnGuard Tools and Spyware Doctor scans.

Starting windows with Spyware Doctor and other security applications may have an impact your system performance on boot up. Can you please start Spyware Doctor after other applications have successfully loaded? Before you shut down your computer please shutdown Spyware Doctor to prevent Spyware Doctor from loading on the next reboot.

Please be aware that Spyware Doctor contains many extensive tools to provide real time protection from potential threats, depending on your computer specifications and applications this will affect your system performance.

Can you please turn the OnGuard feature ON and then turn all of the individual tools to OFF. Can you please then turn all of the Tools back ON one at a time to see if you can isolate the problem tool specific to your PC.

It is not recommended to have more than one antispyware application running at the same time. Can you please list any antispyware or antivirus you maybe running on your system?
