After upgrading to 5.0 from 4.1 and getting hit with the numerous problems, I returned to 4.1 and managed to live with that version for a couple of months. Then, I read that 5.0.1.205 was an improved version. On 6/23 I decided to take the jump and install it.
The slowdown with IE7 and other apps were still around. Since ZoneAlarm would not let me update to their new version as long as i was not on SD 5.x, for the last month I shutdown SD while using the computer and turn it back on to update and maybe find PC Tools fixed the main problems. Well, it has not. I even tried to use it with the following Guards Disabled =Browser, File, Keylogger, Network and Process. The only Guards Enable= Cookie and Startup.
The slowdown symptoms are: IE7, when navigating from a web page to another page within the same web site; Windows Explorer, when displaying the folder tree on the left side, click on one of them and it goes busy... busy... some of the time I end up using Task Manager to end the task (usually not responding).
No, it is not my system... when I shutdown SD, these problems are gone.
You hear me, when I shutdown SD, these problems are gone.

Are the technical staff at PC Tools looking into something else?

Before I retired, I was the VP of Information Services for a large corporation. I am familiar with hard to find software bugs, but please fellows, it has been a long long time since these problems were reported to you.

Let us hear from the apologists! And hear from those that do not have a single problem with SD. So lucky!

webmast, when you installed SD 5, did you do a "clean" install? if not, maybe you could try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it and see if things go better, then..

also, check things in "zone alarm".. maybe you need to "allow" some things within zone alarm's settings in order for SD 5 to run properly..

i saw, recently, where someone was having a problem with their antivirus program and it turned out that the "problem" was that "zone alarm" was blocking some of the av program's dll-files from loading..

another option, in order to see if "zone alarm" is causing the problems, would be to disable "zone alarm" from running automatically at bootup and then see if the problems persist.. :) that was the way that the person who was having problems with their av program discovered that "zone alarm" was causing the problems by blocking some dll-files, which were associated with the av program, from loading.. adjusting some settings within "zone alarm" solved the problem..

Believe me, I tried lots of conditions.
I ran SD 5 with ALL anti-virus/spyware and ZoneAlarm OFF. No luck.
I ran SD 5 with ZoneAlarm OFF but with BitDefender ON. No luck.
I ran SD 5 with ZoneAlarm ON and ALL anti-virus/spyware OFF. No luck.
As far as I know, when I installed SD 5 I removed all files linked to SD 4, I disabled System Restore and ran a scan looking for viruses, then enabled System Restore and installed SD 5.
Just after I posted my latest status, I shutdown SD and all the slowdowns were gone. Since I had SD 5 installed, ZoneAlarm 7.0.337.000 installed successfully. The slowness occurred with both the latest ZoneAlarm and with the previous version.

i hate to sound like an apologist for pctools, but i think it is possible that "bitdefender" is the source of your problems.. when i tried bitdefender, i had problems with it, but maybe things are different, now, with newer versions of the program..

i use avira's "antivir personal premium" and i have not had any problems with it, aside from occasional false-positives..

i don't mean to be knocking bitdefender but i did have problems with it.. i think the people at "bitdefender" are very gracious..

Maybe I was not clear enough on my description about testing under different conditions. I ran SD "WITHOUT" any anti-virus, including BitDefender, running with the same slowness.
No need to qualify your comments about not being an apologist.

Slow down with IE7 is no secret, it is even still in the sticky at the top. So far the PF usage of 200+ is the same as well. On top of that I still find user account shifting slow - roughly 4-5 minutes from 'Admin' to user. It has improved, but still unacceptable at least for me having multiple users at some of my comps. In Firefox I still have not managed to get the cookie-cleaning to work, and I still miss records of up-dates in the history file.
However a new release have been promised 'shortly', let us see what that brings up.
In general quite some bugs have been sorted out the last 6 months, but the main 'problem': The resource hog is still 'oinking'!!;)

until the new version you can use process tamer to automatically lower SD's priority and raise the priority of any apps experiencing slowdown (use explicit rules)
