View Full Version : Problems with 4.1 exiting itself

I have stuck with SD version 4.1 as version 5 has so many problems but now this version is behaving badly.

Problem 1:
SD and IE7 are running together happily and then when I open a new tab in IE, SD must exit itself because it gives me a message to say it is not running and would I like to start it.

Message shown below:
457

I then have to restart SD all over again.

Problem 2: Windows reports that SD has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 3: Windows reports that IE has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 4: Windows reports that Explorer has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 5: A webpage open in one of the tabs in IE stops working and I can't even close the tab. The only solution is to shut down IE using CTRL ALT DEL
and restart it. Sometimes it even requires a reboot to fix it.

Problem 1 is happening a lot and has been for the last few months. Problems 2 to 5 happen less frequently but enough to cause aggravation. I temporarily uninstalled SD to see if that was the cause of these problems and guess what - no freezes or shut downs when SD was no longer installed. I have reinstalled it and I am back to having problems again. So SD is definitely the culprit...

Has anyone else had these problems? And if you're reading this PCTools - please hurry up and get SD sorted out as I am a loyal user who is very close to ditching your product for good and asking for a refund of my subscription.... :(

Hi cyber_spud,

Could you please tick the checkbox for "Remember my answer" and click on 'No'. Check if the issue still occurs.

We have had no reports on the following issue and we'll need to investigate this further. If we require further info, I'll let you know.

I am having the same problem with SD 4.1 and IE. I only use IE when I go to a web site that "requires" it. Otherwise, I only use Firefox. Using IE causes these shutdown/restart messages in SD 4.1 for me as well.

I had similar problems on V5 running IE7 and multiple tabs. Since uppgrading my RAM to 512 I may normally be able to kep 4 tabs open at the same time, before 1 - sometimes 2 before 'internet explorer encountered a problem'. Disabling 'on guards' eased the situation, upgrading RAM 'solved' the problem. Running in Firefox was never a problem. I never experienced similar with IE6 and multiple windows. It might be the 'tabs' in IE7 that causes it. Disabling the tabs in IE7 also seemed to reduce the problem.

For those experiencing issues with SDv4.1 and IE, could you please provide screenshots of any error messages? what operating system are you currently running? security programs? Any additional info to allow us to recreate this issue would assist us further in our investigation.

Today at11.05Am another episode of SDv4.1 closing down. The icon was on the taskbar and immediately the mouse cursor was placed on the icon it disappeared requiring a re-loading of the database. No warnings, no messages. This is becoming a frequent issue. No other programmes were running not even IEv6. Smart Update this morning with no problems.

same as cubfox. no error message displayed. SD just disappeared from the tray. When i go to settings and see if there is anything logged, nothing there. I went to Event Manager and see if there are anything out of the ordinary there, nothing there as well.

Also after updating the database to version 3.07790 and it still quits on its own, i removed SD and reinstalled it. However, no luck. I might go back to version 4.0.

Hi
Please note that version 4.0 will update to 4.1 when you do smart updates.

I have tried your suggestion AChen - ticking the checkbox for "Remember my answer" and clicking on 'No' but the issue still occurs. Not sure if this is connected but I have noticed that in the OnGuard tool "popup blocker", clicking on "On" doesn't do anything - shouldn't this toggle the settings between on/off like the other tools?

Re other security software - I am using AVG free but this never caused this issue when used with SD 3.5 or SD 4.0 and when I used SD 4.1 without AVG, I still had the problem - so I don't think that is the culprit. Re RAM as suggested by another user - I have 1GB installed so I would expect that to be enough.

Any ideas how to get this sorted - or is V5 stable enough for me to dare to use???

Well, I'd say go for V5! It seems to be running pretty well and giving us all the warm fuzzies. Let's hope it stays that way:)

now that i know if i reinstall ver 4.0 it will update to 4.1 automatically, i am very tempt to upgrade to ver 5. I saw there were quite a few issues with ver 5, was it mainly with IE 7.0? Since i am using IE 6, i am hoping Ver 5 will be stable enough...

Not everyone is experiencing problems with IE, just a few. You could always give it a go and if it doesn't go well, uninstall in and go back to the version 4. If you see AChen and Supports replies, a new version 5 will be coming out within the next few days. You could possibly wait for this build... or just try the current version 5. Seems some users are happy with this version. I certainly am :D Goodluck

For the first time I suddannly had 4.1 message that SDwasn't protecting me etc. It had been working as I updated the data base and the icon was on the task bar. IE7being used, I had used Firefox at on stage. No errers.

What sort of message did you get? can you attach a screenshot of that message? Check that Onguard is activated

This is getting silly, my wife just asked me is she should do some thing about the message that Spywhare doctor wasn’t protecting the PC-it had turned itself off again. NO ERRER JUST THE MESSAGE. Until today this has never happened, the only change was today’s data update! What do I do as like this I can’t trust it!
THIS IS MAD SD4.1 IS NOW BLOCKING THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE IN THIS THREAD WHEN YOU BRING UP THR ERRER IMIGE IT HAS!!!!
The only way I can get
http://www.pctools.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=457&d=1185116503 to show ias turn OnGuard off!

Thanks for the image john7. Well this message appears because SD has exited like you mentioned, or onguard has been disabled. So if you open IE, the notification will display. We have tried to re-create this, but no success.

The common.ini file has been corrupted somehow. What you can try doing is, removing this file. See below for instructions -

1. Please first exit from Spyware Doctor. To exit from Spyware Doctor
please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in the notification area
(next to the clock on the Windows taskbar) and select Exit from the menu
that appears.

2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor and delete the file named 'common'.

3. Launch Internet Explorer

4. Spyware Doctor will then prompt you to start, select Yes or No and check "remember my answer"

5. Please then relaunch Spyware Doctor.

If this does not fix the problem, remove the file again and uninstall/re-install SDv4.1. The common.ini file is created once you have selected from the option in the screenshot you have provided.

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for reply, what the link is not a screen shot I have put on the site (I have no idea how to do so) but a link that caused SD4.1 to block a site. As said else where its mad!

Have now been able to access the image, rather than the warning, with SD OnGuard enabled by adding pctools.com to the white list. What a performance. why not have as most programs the option for allow, once or permanently (let alone why some of them are being blocked!)

New one today, as I came out of hibernation SD4.1 closed itself down. I was moving the pointer to it to load up SD to check for updates and it just vanished. Before any one asked, no error message just an empty space where its icon had been!
