View Full Version : Resource Depletion

Anyone know why I keep getting low on resources? After about an hour or so on the net, I'll start getting slow, slow, slow. Then I get the 'out of memory' errors, or 'not enough memory to run program'. Eventually, everything just dies and I have to reboot.
I've got 64m Ram and I was able to check the last time it happend, my swap file was only 122m... I've still got 6g free!!!
It would seem to me that the swap file would keep getting bigger. I checked the virtual memory settings, and it's all max'ed. Any suggestions? I tried looking at the resourse meter (after installing it of course) but that didn't help any.
Thanks in advance!

try first to check for viruses, otherwise maybe you've to reinstall windows

I already did all that. No viruses, I did do a re-install, and it knocked my number of crashes down greatly. But as for the resource problem, Microsoft has admitted to the problem, but hasn't COMMITED to finding a solution. Except for of course, rebooting. Gee, what a grand fix! :) I wouldn't have thought of that, but seriously: Who wants to reboot every hour or so?? NOT ME!!!

<font color=blue> Your safest bet right now would be to get more memory, at lest 128mb. </font color=blue>

It would seem to me that 64M would be sufficient. Since windows relies mostly on virtual memory... I've got 5 gigs worth that isn't doing anything, that's why I don't understand the depletion. It would seem that the swao file would just get overwhelmingly big. I had problems due to out of memory issues with my p120 that has 32M RAM and only 1.6 gig space. I understood when the swp file took all my space, and then I had problems.
But with 5 gigs sitting there doing nothing, that's what I don't understand.
But additional memory was in my very near future plans anyway, I just need to know why the depletion is there, when I have so much virtual memory, so to speak. Isn't physical memory basically used to initially start up and run a program? The virtual memory used to keep that application active? Correct me if I'm wrong here. I'm not a newbee or a semi-advanced user - I'm realistic and humble in saying contrary to my believing I know everything, (acronym for IKE :) ) I don't know everything!! HA-HA!
So, anyone with a logical answer as to why I keep having to reboot just to refresh my system?
Bill??
<Bill G> Why yes, I do have something to say. For a nominal fee of $249.95 you can purchase the WinME SE FA edition to solve this problem. Not only will that make me a richer man than what I already am, it will give you three times as many problems as you had before, thus resulting in stress tolerance achievement and other related issues. I'll leave the FA definition at your descretion.
:)
(Sorry, I couldn't help myself)

use msconfig to selectively disactive each automatically running program and test the pc with or without each on.
Did u try to install your hard disk on another pc (friend) and test it? Maybe an hardware problem.

Sorry for the length of this message. I wanted to try to include everything.
Thanks for your help. I'll try to be as specific as possible so we don't
play to much tag.
First off, I have patched, updated, everything possible to the most recent drivers.
That includes Windows, Modem, Video, Sound, CD, etc.
I flashed my bios the other day, there was an update from the version I had, but it
didn't seem to change anything, or make anything different. Apparently, the flash
was just a compatibility issue with certain hardware, none of which I have, but I
like to keep things up-to-date.
Here's a description of my system
Compaq Presario 5000 series model 5WV270
Processor - AMD Duron 750 Mhz
(side note: Some system diagnositic report this as an Athlon)
Memory 64m
OS - Windows Millenium Edition v4.90.3000
IE version 5.50.4522.1800 128-bit
Seagate Fireball 20 gig HD
Standard Floppy (duhh, of course)
CD-Rom 1 - 40x CD (don't know specifics)
Cd-Rom 2 - 12x/4x/32x Cd-R (don't know specifics)
Audio - SoundMax Integrated
Video - NVidia Vanta 3d (D3d) w/8 megs onboard
Modem (factory) PCTel Micromodem HSP56k (Piece of Crap)
Ethernet Card - Accton En1270d Series PCI Fast E-Adapter (no other specifics)
Toys/Addons
USR Sportster 56k (serial) (Now we're talking!)
Lexmark z22 Printer (USB)
Visioneer 3300 Flatbed Scanner (Parallel)
Intel PC Camera (USB)
Ummm.... I think that's it! :)
Currently, and most times often than not, I have the same things running.
Some of this are in my startup, or I manually start. I usually always have
these items running -
Cool Mouse (For my three button)
3Com Modem Manager (So I can keep track of my time and d/l's)
And MSN Messenger which keeps popping up out of the blue, and I
toggled it OFF in Outlook, but the dang thing keeps coming back.
Whenever it does, I close it out. I don't even use it.
Below is what MSConfig has stated is running in the background.
Opening MSConfig, these are the one's I left open (checked) but
there are about 30 others unchecked (inactive on boot) -
Taskbar Display Properties (Quick Access) [TRAY]
ScanRegistry (c:\windows\scanregw.exe)
TaskMonitor (c:\windows\taskmon.exe)
PCHealth (c:\windows\PCHealth\Support\PCHSchd.exe -s)
SystemTray (systray.exe)
HidServ (hidserv.exe run)
CPQEasyAcc }
EAClean > Internet Keyboard Stuff
Digital Dashboard }
PCTVoice (pctvoice.exe)
MotiveMonitor (c:\program files\motive\motmon.exe)
CPQInet
Alogserv [McAfee client]
LoadPowerProfile [Power Scheme]
Scheduling Agent [McAfee Scheduler] [TRAY]
*StateMgr [System Restore]
ContrySelection
McAfeeVirusScanService [TRAY]
on a side note, windows help seems to take forever to load. (about 20 seconds)
and according to SiSoft Sandra (I love that proggy) my memory load is 200% and
advises to quit some programs. Dang, I'm near minimal now!!
Microsofts solution for this depletion is to reboot.

Any ideas??
