V4.1.1.0.1 Database 3.07760

Not only does V4.1 not allow access to various sites through site blocking but it is now self exiting the programme. What give with PC tools ?. This has happened to me 3 times in the last couple of days. Once re-started it performs OK until the next time.

Anyone else had this problem?.

We are still waiting for a "fix" for site blocking. How long does it take?.

V4 worked with few problems. If it ain't broke why fix it?.

My system is a simple Time computer, 1667 MHz, with 2.0Gb of DDR Ram.

Incidentally when scanning The processor is running @100% and using approx 400Mb Ram.

If you add the websites in question to the allow list (Settings > Domain whitelist) that should solve your other problem.
SD version 4.1 should use ~100%CPU when scanning (except the disk scanner), especially the registry scanning. Is the 400Mb RAM physical RAM or virtual memory?

Nah, AChen already told me the whitelist not working in 4.1 is a known issue.

you say that SD 4.1 is "closing".. i assume you mean its realtime "guard" is closing? i have seen where several people have had similar problems, lately, with various "guards", where they would close..

in the most recent case that i read about, in "avira's" forums, where antivir's "avgnt.exe" process was closing, it turned out that the "zone alarm" firewall was the source of the problem.. "zone alarm" was blocking some of the dll-files associated with "avgnt.exe" from running.. allowing the associated dll-files to run, in zone alarm's configuration-settings, solved the problem...

if you use "zone alarm", try disabling it from running automatically at startup and see if that resolves the problem with SD's "guard's" closing..

I have exactly the same problem with 4.1. This happened to me when i am just browing with IE 6.0. Just happened a few minutes ago while browsing Games Workshop US online site. Sometimes when i just simply launch IE SD would just quits. Only when IE is completedly launched would SD launches itself again and appears on my task bar.

I have no default site setup for IE. I clear history and temp files each time before i completely close IE - what i do it close IE, launch it again so it is a blank page. then i go to Tools/ internet Options, Delete files- ofline content as well, and history. Also there is no werid activity logged in SD or Event Viewer. SD just quits and then launches itself again if i reopen Firefox or IE. (Firefox has no default page as well and all cache, history or temp files are deleted like IE)

I am using XP SP2, .net 2.0 wtih all major patches applied. it all started yesterday after i ran Smart Update.. but only thing i saw that downloaded was the database..

and i don't have Zone Alarm, just Adaware and Spybot S&D but i set it so it doesn't loads upon startup.

OK.. i see now.. you all are saying that the problem started with the last update.. i don't run SD 4.1 is realtime so i didn't notice a problem with the guard's closing..

Hi all respondents. I will try to answer in turn.

To mjq424: (i) My choice of words of "self exit" would be better expressed as the programme closing down requiring re initiating of the DATABASE. (ii)The adding of websites to the Domain Whitelist does NOT always effect a cure. (iii) It is the PFusage that is 400Mb.

stong: My problem is also when I am browsing and also when I run other programmes ie, Family Tree Maker when connected to the internet for census results (I am creating a Family Tree).

rewolfe_98: In my case I cannot confirm that updates have played any part.


To All:
As a further complication today Sun 22 Jul at 07.45 am, my auto update failed to operate. A manual update suggested that updates were available.

The update was evidently downloaded but the programme failed to restart locking my computer system. Task Master was unable to close the programme.

Re-starting, SD loaded but the updates did not. A further attempt to download updates informed me that my Product was "Up to Date".Where had the Updates gone?.

The plot thickens.

normally, there are no updates on saturday mornings or sunday mornings, but only on weekdays, like monday mornings, tuesday mornings, etc.. (incidentally, there was one day, last week, when i did not see an update, for that day)

i just ran the updater and it didn't show that any new updates were available.. currently, i have "database version 3.07760"..

As redwolfe_98 has mentioned, there have been no updates since friday. However one was released today and the db version is 3.07770 for version 4.1.

cubfox, this is why you have received the message 'the database is up to date'.

Please try to run the Auto-updates again and see if you are still having problems with this.

I didn't get a message box like cyber_spud did. I was running IE 6 and it never gave me any pop up box or message when SD quits. I have only noticed SD quits when it launches again by itself when i launch IE again or open another IE window.

I didn't run the update on Friday so thats why SD downloads the database when i ran it on Saturday.

Thanks for the info stong. This seems like a very bizzare scenario, but this is something we'll be investigating further.

Regarding Site guard blocking your default page, could you please try the following:

1. Please exit from Spyware Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears. (Also make sure that IE is closed)

2. Go to c:/Program Files/Spyware Doctor/Tools/siteguard.dll and iesdsg.dll, please delete both these files.

3. Once you have deleted it, open up Spyware Doctor and perform a Smart Update. This will reinstall siteguard.dll and iesdsg.dll.

4. Once you enter the website, you will be prompted to block the website and you will be allowed to choose if you wish to allow the website.

Let me know how you go.

Database version 3.07780 is the latest. Can you check c:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\ to see if siteguard.dll and iesdsg.dll are in the directory.

I have just tested this and removed both siteguard.dll and iesdsg.dll and performed an update and it downloaded both files. In this case, could you please PM your email address and I'll send these 2 files to you. Give it a try and we'll go from there.

achen, just for the record, i noticed that the updater in "SD 4" would try to download missing SD files, but the updater in SD 4.1 does not try to download missing SD files..

in the past, i have deleted some of SD 4's and SD 4.1's files, like the two BHO's that you mentioned, "iesdpb.dll" and "iesdsg.dll", among a couple of others (ikhlayer).. (for now, i just "unregistered" the two BHO's without deleting the files.. i do that because i don't like the way the SD BHO's are constantly opening another SD file, "common.ini", when IE is running)..

I had a backup copy of those two files so i had replaced them.
