When I send a fax to a local number in my area code the dialer apparently dials the area code and I can't connect.
I have set the fax acount to my user name.

assuming you are using the standard dialer and not one that came along with your fax hardware:
go ControlPanel > Network and Dial-up. Select the conncetion definition for your fax. Open its Property sheet.
Check: the "Use area code and DIaling Properties" will be checked. In this case make sure you have also the proper area prefix (your own local one) and the proper country selected.
Next: go ControlPanel > Modem, and on the General tab you should find a section Dialing Properties and a button. Hit this button and on the opened tab page, select your local area or define a new entry for your location. If this is an office machine, then that one entry is enough. For notebooks on the road, add extra definitions as required.
But for an office machine, you just as well could uncheck "use area code..." checkbox in Dialing Properties and add the (non-local) area codes.

It now works! Actually there is no 'Network' icon. The 'Modem and Dialer' is the one that is needed. I reviewed the settings (again), found there were no changes to be made, closed it, and tried to send a fax AND IT WORKED! It's like quantom mechanics, the dialer was in an indeterminate state until someone helped me.

Thanks....
