I am just another PC Tools Antivirus software user who has encountered huge problems with the latest version.
Scanning global forums for problems about this software is pretty scarry..
After down loading the latest site version, the new software simply hung my hardware mid process, the CPU ran white hot 100% under the control of swdsvc.exe and then when this was shut down, as I found to my horror, shutting the hardware down mid process damaged my Thunderbird mail box which was open while PC Tools was running. The effect was to clean out my inward mail box of all historical mail.
My advice to anyone contemplating a shift to version 5...DON"T!

Are you referring to SDv5 or PCTAV or SDv5 + AV plugin?

I find it very bizzare for SDv5 to conflict with Thunderbird because there is no Email Guard in SDv5. And what do you mean by damage your Thunderbird? Any error messages, screenshots you can provide?

What other security software are you currently running and what are the specs of your computer?

I have SDv5 installed with the AV plugin on several machines and have had not similar issues to yours.

Cheers,
Chippa

Spy Doctor plus AV ..

I'm no expert and i can't argue about how or why..all I know is that uploading version 5.0.... caused my hardware to slow to a crawl..then stop mid stream.
Why it caused a clean out of my mail box is also mystery...
All I know now is that if you look at other reports around the global..other users have had similar problems.

Can you provide any additional info?

What other security software have you installed? Maybe a conflict somewhere, are you using any spam programs?

Anything that can help us to determine what is actually happening?

I have been on this forum for a while and I remember SD having problems with Thunderbird, but this was during the early beta stages, but once email guard was removed, the problems also went with it.

Therefore you shouldnt be having problems relating to emails. If others are experiencing this, I sure haven't seen any threads lately on this.

Chippa

Maybe I missed it but I don't recall seeing this problem on the SD forum. One would think it would show up here first, wouldn't one??

Hi Chippa..
thanks for your interest...the common thread if there is one with version 5, is that many computers simply slow to a crawl once the software is deployed..
I know its not a RAM problem because under task manager my 500MB RAM is only 40% committed at the point that the programme freezes. My Pentium III Dell CPU simply can't hack what ever process PC Tools is using, and there are no resources left either to maintain the system or handle any other activity that might be going on simultaneously.
I have seen several reports that PC Tools were/are aware of this and that their engineers are supposed to be looking at the problem..but to be fair to customers, there should have been a flag about this issue

hi Socrfan...Mmmm..well I just did a decent Google search and I'm not the only person in the world to have this problem. Not every one who uses this software bothers to come to this forum...until things hurt too much and you start really looking. interestingly enough PC Tools asked me to load up all the log files to them..and this turned out to be a pointless exercise because their server "banned" the data.

When you did the google search did you check the dates of the info you found, they could have been related to earlier beta versions of SD. I've tried a search but was unable to come up with anything.

Also I forgot to mention to check if you have Email Guard as one of the OnGuard tools.

The only thing I can suggest from this point is to uninstall SDv5 and reinstall in safemode. This will avoid any potential conflicts during the installation phase. You can download sdv5 from www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/.

Okay, no offense but the software companies site is usually where I go first when I have a problem with their product. It's much the same as if I buy something from Wal Mart and have a problem with it. I don't go running all over town looking for help, I go straight back to Wal Mart.
