Running on a Thinkpad T22, 512Mb memory, 1Ghz processor, with AVG Free edition, IE6 (was IE7 but uninstalled IE7, in case that's relevent), XP Home.
Switching pages caused a cpu spike from IE, followed by a long SD 4.1 cpu spike, rendering the PC ususable for browsing.
I've also just run Windows Update.
I have wondered if some of SD performance issues were due to the current Windows Update SVCHOST issues, but I have switched back from Microsoft Update, switched off automatic updates, and run the appropriate hotfixes to resolve know Update problems, so I think that eliminates that possibility. I also saw no SVCHOST cpu usage.
I have now removed SD4.1. I am also unfortunately about to give up on SD - I originally had a problem with SD4 slowness, renewed my license when SD5 appeared to stabilise, but have had little or no success in trying SD 4, 4.1 and 5 on a variety of PCs from this slug to a 3Ghz one. SD rendered all of these unusable in some way or another. The original product was very effective, but it now appears to be totally unstable, and from some of the posts, of limited effectiveness. I have expended a lot of time unsuccessfully trying to coax it into life, avidly trying all betas and updates and am disappointed that SD have not been able to resolve the issues. Occasional improvements didn't appear to be sustainable - 2 steps forward, one, two or three steps back! It is possible that they have been aggravated by Microsoft issues (IE7, Vista, and Update issues), but they have ended up with a dead or dying product. Development on an unstable platform unfortunately creates such problems. A shame. Regards, Keith (a professional software tester)

Im quite suprise to see this happen. This is one of those specific issues that relate to a PC's environment. It will be very difficult to resolve, because the actual cause of the slow downs is pretty much unknown and relating to SD. I have been running both V4.1 and V5.0.0.184 without any slowdowns. All seems to work quite well, On the machines with V4.1, I am using Norton and SDv5.0.0.184 with the AV plugin on others.

If you disable Onguard, does this help with the slow downs? You could try to limit out what tool is causing the problem. This may help investigate this further. My guess siteguard of browser guard which is constantly monitoring. See if this helps.

Version 4.1 has been much improved compared with version 4.0. But you say 4.0 gave you the slow down issues already, so downloading v4.1 will be no different because something is already causing this originally. I would like to assist you, but this would be very difficult to find the problem.

Cheers,
Chippa

Maybe you can try reinstall SD4 or 4.1 in safe mode.
It solved my problems with SD 4.1.

Can you explain how you know which component is causing the spike under performance after evoking windows task manager

thanks

hey, can you try to run a Belarc Advisor (search from google) and then it will tell you all the process you have installed. Then email to tech support as I think they should be able to help for this

Well guys I am glad that after almost two months since the launch of the beta SD 5.0.169 to the unsuspecting public. And after weeks of almost endless new versions, perhaps now PC Tools are starting to get things right. But the majority of this beta testing by us joe public. Should have been done before SD5 was launched in the first place its that simple.

I closed my eyes, knocked on wood and proceeded to download and install SD 5.0.186 (Monday 5/21). This was my second attempt, but the first one was a disaster so I stepped back to SD 4.x
This time, after several positive forum postings, I rolled the dice.
The new version loads very fast, no several minutes of start up. Scanning was faster than it used to.

So far, the IE7 browsing problem seems to be back. It is taking a long time for web pages to appear - regardless of the web site visited - and going from one web page to another within the same site takes forever.

I am using Task Manager a lot, usually to End Task because some of the Apps are running or not responding.

I will continue testing it for a few days but if it behaves as currently, I may have to step back to SD 4.x

Slow responsiveness with IE7 (slow web browsing and unresponsive behaviour)
Status: Reported
This is still listed as the position with IE7. If after this time the problem hasn't been sorted it really isn't good at all given, what ever many may think of it, the program most use. It is no real responce to say change brouser, being the main oe any program should be able to work with it. I will be staying with 4 untill such a basic problem is sorted

Retried with 5.186 to see what's what.
Still kills IE6 - every page change gives 98% cpu usage for most of a minute by swdsvc. Taskmanager shows what is hogging the cpu. This excessive cpu use disappears when onguard is switched off. Switch it on again and it takes a minute before you can do anything - just switching it on seems to kybosh the pc.

btw, I'm using a Netgear wpn511 wireless adapter, in case the drivers add to the confusion.

Cleaned the pc of minor infections, then deinstalled again.

Hi John,

Could you try and disable the 'Browser Guard' and see how this goes for you.

Certainly, George ;-)

Prime suspects are Network Guard, Browser Guard and possibly File guard - but even disabling all of these it still decides to run swdsvc at high cpu occasionally. It seems that disabling either Network Guard or Browser guard has the greatest effect (in that order).

I am running on a network, with shared drives. On another PC I have noticed that disabling the network adapter enables me to squeeze maximum revs out of the PC forother apps, so it may be that there is network activity that is exciting SD.

Its weird that SDv4 and SDv5 are both slowing down Internet Explorer because both these use different engines and are totally different from one another. It could be a combination of programs linking to the problem. Some potential conflict with another security program perhaps. What other programs are active? SDv4 should not cause the slow IE problems, I haven't seen this at all on my pc and haven't heard of this on the forum. So whatever is happening with v4 is causing the same problem in v5.

It was my decision to upgrade to SD v5.x for a second time. The first one was a disaster but after hearing so many good reviews on the version 185, I wanted to give it another try.
It loaded faster than SD v4.x, it seems to have better features. Then I started to get serious slowdowns when using IE 7. Just going from one web page to another the system would go into a "busy" status and take minutes to finally show up the selected web page.
It doesn't matter what web site I was visiting, all were affected equally. Even trying to use Task Manager to end the task was difficult because Task Manager was not showing up as long as the system was so busy.
Proof of the problem: twice I shutdown SD 5 level 186 and then the busy status was no longer a problem. I tried to disable a number of Guards but it did not make any difference.
What to do? Wait for more releases or just junk it and use another spyware.
I have been using BitDefender and ZoneAlarm with SD for a long time, it seems SD 4.x did not have the "busy" situation.
I am soon making the decision so I will keep an eye for other reviews.
What a shame, such a good software updated to such a bad version!
