For quite a while I experienced my computer freeze everytime SP5 with AV updates, but only when spyware-update is included in the update, but it does not freeze when it is only AV that updates.
I run the latest SP with AV and the latest updates
I use vista premium 32bit
Sorry about my english, hope you understand my question.

I think I understand. This happens to me sometimes at startup when SD5 and my antivirus or firewall attempt to update also happens at other times. Must be some conflict in updateing.

Are you referring to SD+AV updates?
Have not been able to replicate this. How long does it freeze for? Also is any other programs (AS/AV/Firewall) updating at the same time?
Cheers,
Chippa

when I update my SD5 with AV, everytime a spyware data is included in the update my computer freeze, I can not open any programs or documents and I can not close my computer the normal way.
But it does not happen(freeze) when it is only AV data is downloaded from the smart update.
yes it may sound a bit stranged, but this is what I exsperience

In this case, the best possible thing to do is to re-install SDv5.
1. Exit Spyware Doctor
2. Go to Start-> Programs-> Spyware Doctor-> Uninstall Spyware Doctor
3. Follow the prompts
4. Go to c:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor, delete this folder if it still exist
5. Download SD + AV from http://www.pctools.com/downloads/sdasetup.exe
6. Install this setup file
7. Run a Smart Update and see how you go

Thank Chippa
Support already gave me that advise, but it still didn't work. So here is the reply from support but I haven't tested it:
Thank you for contacting PC Tools.
Regarding your query, to resolve this issue please follow the
instructions i have provided below.
Restart the Computer in Safe Mode:
1. Click on the Start button. The Start menu will appear.
2. Select ''Shut Down'' from the menu (''Turn off Computer'' in XP).
The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box will appear.
3. Select ''Shut down'' (or, ''Turn Off'' in XP) and click the Yes (or
OK) button.
4. When the computer starts back up, begin immediately by pressing the
F8 key repeatedly until the Windows Startup menu appears with various
options.
5. By using the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard, select 'Safe
Mode with networking'.
6. Login to your account (if asked).
7. Wait and eventually Windows will start in Safe Mode.
Then I should perform a Smart Update. But I would say if they do not fix it before my next annual subscription I will cancel my subscription.
No hard fellings, but if the product do not work on my computer so be it.

Thats a fair call. Im just stumped over this issue. I am trying to figure out what could be the problem, why the AV updates work, but not the SD + AV updates.
Give supports suggestion a go and see what happens.
Goodluck

This sounds very similar to the problems I am seeing. I do not have SD's antivirus protection installed, so obviously, I am only getting antispyware updates. My machine locks up every 2-4 days, and I have smart update set to run every other day (scans every day). I usually find the machine locked up in the morning after SD has done its thing. I had thought that a variety of things (updates or scans or whatever) may be to blame, but since it is always a few days between lockups, perhaps it is only the smart update that is doing it. I was awake once during an update, and my machine locked up immediately after it was done.
I think I am going to have to do some experimenting; I guess I should schedule my updates at a time when I can watch what happens a little closer. Maybe do some manual updates. I guess I could even turn off updates for a few days and see if the lockups go away. That, and keep a more careful record of when the lockups occur vs. when updates were done. Hmmm, now, I just have to find the time to run these tests...
After looking at my scheduled tasks, I guess I am doing an update every day; however, what might be happening is that the update isn't always updating anything because there may be no updates to retrieve. I guess I am going to have to also keep track of the database and intelli-scan sig versions to see if an update actually did anything, and see if I can correlate actual updates with my lockups. Something to try at least.
I have my smart update scheduled to run @ 2:30 am Central Daylight Time. Can anyone (I assume this would have to be someone from PC Tools here) confirm one way or the other that I would have retrieved actual updates on 5/15, but not on 5/16?
Hopefully, armed with some data, I can figure out if my lockups have anything to do with smart updates.

Hi ajm,
The database version released on the 5/15 was 5.07300. 6/15 - no updates and the latest database version is 5.07310 which has just been released.

OK, that makes sense. So, I got a lockup after the update to 5.07300. After my 5/16 update, it still reported 5.07300, which makes sense if there was no update. However, later on in the day, smart update ran again and downloaded 5.07310, after which I encountered another lockup. So, I was really beginning to think the lockups were occurring after every smart update in which the database was updated. Until this morning that is, when I noticed I am now at 5.07320 but a lockup did not occur.
Ugh! I thought I had a pattern figured out here. Anyways, perhaps this info will help the developers figure something out. It definately seems tied to the smart update in some way (especially because I have seen it lock up immediately after an update was run while I was working on the machine). Perhaps today's update was different from the others in some way.
By the way, what caused my second update to run yesterday? I have them scheduled to run only once a day, so obviously SD must run updates on its own sometimes too, correct?

I have seen the same thing. It doesnt happen with every update just some. Also yesterdays auto. updates did something to the tray icon. It says SPYWAREDOCTOR STARTING and stays that way untill a scan starts. After reboot it still says SPYWAREDOCTOR STARTING and does not change unless a scan is started.

So the lock ups only occur during an auto smart update? not a manual update? do you think this is related to the users that are not able to perform an auto update?

I don't know; I haven't performed a whole lot of manual updates. Besides not wanting to potentially inflict more pain on myself, SD seems to update frequently enough where I don't need to do it manually. When I try, it doesn't do anything, as there is nothing to update (and the lockups only occur if it actually updates).
However, now that I have the thing set to prompt me when an update is available and my scheduled update task removed, that is exactly what I am going to try. I assume it won't make a difference, but we shall see.

hello king g
I smart update manually and my computer locks up. If you look throgh the post I previously wrote you step upon where support give me an answar to how to make a smart update without the computer locks up/freezes.
And it works...

After I got the latest Spyware Doctor with Antivirus (5.0.0.186) my computer still locked up/freezed when I made a manual "smart update".
Then I put my SD to auto smart update and that works fine for me. Two times have SD updated itself with no lock ups/freezing of my computer.
