I've relied on SD for anti-spyware protection for the last year or so. But I'd like to use another program to check that nothing is getting past SD.

What is the best program to use for scanning? I know that Spybot used to very good at finding spyware, but not removing it! What else would you recommend?

You could try the free version of Lavasoft Adaware se. or superantispyware.

When I had SD installed, using the real-time protection, I also used Spybot S&D, (really because I have always used it and it's just an old favourite of mine), and the SuperAntispyware Free Edition for on demand scanning on a weekly basis. With the SAS Free Edition you don't get the real-time monitoring but what you do get is a 'right-click' scan option, which is quite handy if you want to scan something in particular that you have maybe just downloaded, removal capabilities for stubborn infections is also generally very good.

Both Ad Aware and Spybot have fallen behind. SuperAntiSpyware or SpySweeper are good choices.

SuperAntiSpyware or SpySweeper are fine choices on there own and can confirm they both work fully together. I chose the paid version of SuperAntiSpyware with the real time protection, and both work fine together.

Hi
I definitly recommend AVG AS as most antimalware professionals recommend it. Hijack This is only really useful as a forensic tool, post infection.

for a second scanner you just need to know if anything's there so you can send a malware decective log or install something to remove it;)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Based on the number of recommendations, I'll give AVG a go.

Keep in mind that after the "grace" period this becomes a limited version with some of it's features turned off.

the free edition is poor, i have adaware and it is a half way product, not the best, superantispy may be better not sure, is not web sweeper a better product (paid version). Most free versions are not that good.

I too like SUPERAntiSpyware. The Pro version with real-time enabled is very low on resources and has no conflicts with my AV, (KAV). Couldn't tell any difference on the PC's performance before or after installing it.

Plus I have had some success at cleaning stubborn infections off other machines with the free edition, which was good enough evidence for me to give it a 'whirl' myself.

Disagree on free not being any good. SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 is also good and SUPERAntiSpyware finds the odd infection SD4 misses. In fact these days SD4 finds nothing. It isn't being updated much, may have to trial SD4.1 but after SD5 i'm pretty reluctant to go through that again

Downloaded the a-squared Free edition. German sw, and looks good. PC Tools stuff is looking less attractive day by day.

Adaware & Spybot S&D are tools of the past. The new reigning champs are SAS and aSquared. AVG AS (formerly ewido) is excellent also. Keep all three on your box for on demand or context scans. Please keep in mind that since these are the free versions that they must be updated manually. They'll remind you ;)

Hi
Adaware 2007 may change things a little (it is being released in June), dont really know how good it is though. Spybot has its uses (the immunization feature is very nice). The only disadvantage to SAS and A2 is that they take a long time to scan (although they are very thorough). It is almost worth paying for AVGAS as the full features are quite nice.

i reccommend kasperskys online scanner

it's particularly good at detecting viruses and not bad against spyware

I would recommend Webroot Spysweeper another top rated anti spyware product. or TrendMicro. Really stick with the big names. Alot of fake products out there.

Hi
I do not recommend Trend Micro Antispyware. It has not reviewed well (worse than when SD5 came out) as its detecting and removal is poor. SpySweeper wouldbe better. I still think though that AVG Antispyware or SUPERAntispyware are the best additions to SD.

Trend is a joke. I'm on work PC and company IT used Trend Offisecan. SAS and a2-squared find multiple infections every day.

the best defence can be provided with one real time and many online scanners as you can use a different one every week providing a layered defence against all kinds of malware

trend micro and most of the big names (mcafee, norten ect) provide inadiquate defence

the only one of the popular suits that provides decent protection is kaspersky

AVG antispyware or a-squared anti-malware BOTH FREEWARES would be a good choice.
