View Full Version : SD Splash screen on startup

Is there a setting in SD 5 to prevent the splash screen from displaying upon startup.
It was not doing this before yesterday and I don't believe it is a SD 5 problem. I was on PC Pitstop yesterday and ran a privacy scan called Erase. It is supposed to tell you what other people can see on your PC then you are supposed to pay $$$ to buy it and use it. I believe it is like PCT Privacy Guard. Well, Winpatrol went crazy while it was running and a few things changed including the splash screen appearing. PC Tools FW didn't even load during startup after this. Remind me not to run that again LOL.
Anyway, I can't find a setting in SD5 to turn it off.
Thanks,
Deb

Hi
To put it simply...There is no splash screen in Spyware Doctor 5!
I would suggest running full spyware and antivirus scans to check for malware. If that doesnt turn anything up, post a Hijack This log and I will look at it.

I ran a couple of scans which found 2 cookies. Interesting find in winpatrol...there was a reference to look n' stop firewall which I think had yesterdays date. Said if I was already running a firewall to get rid of this. I cannot find it in programs, downloaded files...nowhere. I mentioned how when SD starts I get the opened screen which shows everything loading. I have to minimize it. Then it seems if I go back into it I have to enable it. Also PCT firewall now has to be started manually. I have both pinned to startup.
I am including a hijackthis log.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
Well the good news is that your Hijack This log is clean :)
With both of these program errors. I would suggest uninstalling both and then reinstalling in safe mode to see if that solves the problem.
The firewall is listed in the services so should just start.
The reason why Spyware Doctor is opening on startup is that this line:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Doctor] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\swdoctor.exe" /Q
tells it to. You shouldnt need this line.
Have rules been configured in Winpatrol for SD?

Hi,
Glad the log is clean. No rules in winpatrol. I did find one interesting entry that I am still looking for that said something about look n' stop firewall. Also referred my to spyware warrior because at onetime I guess that application was on their rogue list. I never downloaded any part of that firewall. I may be wrong but I thought it was a CAB file or in that folder. When I display the security on my PC it says one of the firewall I have is active. To my knowledge PCT is the only one I have. Crazy.
I will try what you said when I get home from work. Will reinstall both firewall and SD.
Thanks again for your time and help.

Hi
To resolve the "One of your firewalls is active" problem you need to do the following:
Open Control Panel
Select Performance and Maintenance
Select: Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
Locate: Windows Management Instrumentation, right click on it and select Stop
Go to the wbem folder (C:\Windows\system32\wbem)
Locate the Repositor folder and delete it (DELETE ONLY THE REPOSITORY FOLDER!!)
Repeat steps 1 - 5 but this time right click on Windows Management Instrumentation and select Start. This will recreate the Repository folder.
Reboot your computer
Hope that helps

Hi There,
Well, I'm a much happier camper tonight. I followed all of your instructions. I uninstalled and installed in safe mode. Interestingly enough I then went and ran another HJT log to remove the entry that was causing SD to open when it loaded and the entry was no longer there. Everything back to normal. Very strange. I cannot imagine what changed things. PC Pitstop says Erase is safe and does not download anything to the PC.
Thanks for your time and help.
