There's this weird thing that all of a sudden I can't view any _local_ images in IE4. Everything is OK if I surf the internet, but none of the images on hard-drives or CD-ROMs show correctly. I suspect the registry is somehow screwed up, so if anyone has similar experiences, please help.

Have you installed or uninstalled any image viewers or editors recently?
Anyway, find a local image in Windows Explorer, Shift-Right Click on it, select "Open With", select IE (if that's the viewer you want to use), check "always open this kind of file with this program". With any luck that'll fix it, but you'll have to repeat the sequence for each image type you have.

Sorry, that didn't do the trick. Guess I'll have to reinstall some components (I've tried to avoid reinstalling Win98, but this OS is sooo clever).

It sounds like you have some file associations whacked. If you don't know how to manually associate files in the START|SETTINGS|FOLDER OPTIONS...|FILE TYPES menu then reinstalling is your best bet. Be careful when manually deleting or editing files. Yes Win98 is smart, but the operator has to be smarter.
