Given that Spam Monitor uses some of the technology in Spampal is there any reason to use one over the other? I use Thunderbird and my wife uses Outlook 2007 if that makes any difference.

This really depends on personal preference. It will depend on which one works best for you. You should be able to determine it by the activity of the program and which functions are easier to use. Spam Monitor works really well with Outlook 2007 because of the toolbar that it includes. You will not have the toolbar with Thunderbird email client.
Best way is to try them both and see which one you like.

Unfortunately the toolbar crashes in O/L 2007 - I have a ticket open about that but I am waiting for a response. I guess I am more interested in relative performance and support, it seems that neither product is very well supported but I'm not sure about their different performance both in terms of accuracy or speed.

I had the following from technical support
Spam Monitor will only support the following Email Clients:
- Outlook* 97, 98, 2000, 2002, 2003
- Outlook Express
- Netscape, Mozilla
- Eudora 6
- Opera 6, 7
So, it truly seems that this is a dead product as there is no mention of O/L 2007, Windows Mail (for Vista), Eudora 7, Opera 8 or 9. I guess this is not the product for me as I'm not prepared to pay for something that isn't supported or updated.

I guess thats the best alternative. Maybe check back here after a few months if Spam Monitor has been working well for you in the past. Maybe they may have developed something compatible for Outlook 2007.
Best of luck :D
