View Full Version : How do I disable SD 5 in Safe Mode?

Well, I have been running SD 5 build 179 since it came out with no more lockups. Until last night that is. Now, my machine has locked up 3 times. This morning, it was locked up again, so I powered off/on and logged back into Windows. I left for a few minutes to get ready for work and let it start everything up. When I came back, my machine was already locked up again! Since I am trying to get my @#$^ taxes filed, this is worst possible time for this to happen. If the thing locks up my machine immediately, I imagine the only thing I can do is to boot into Safe Mode and try to disable it from within there.

So, my question is, what is the best way to disable SD 5 from within Safe Mode? If that doesn't work, what do I have to do to make sure it is uninstalled completely?

I am at the point where I feel I have given PC Tools enough time to figure out how to get SD 5 to work. It still doesn't and is still locking up my machine. I pretty much can't wait any longer to have a functional antispyware app. My patience only goes so far. Time to check out an alternate solution, I guess. Hopefully, I can get my money back.

Hi
Tom.tdw - Ajm is unable to get into Windows at the moment so msconfig.exe wont work.
Ajm - When (and if Windows boots) in Safe Mode go to Services under Administrative tools and disable both Spyware Doctor Service and Spyware Doctor Auxillary Service. Then try rebooting in Normal Mode (hopefully they wont start up)

Ah yes, that should do the trick (hopefully). I forgot SD is now running as a couple of services; I was thinking I had to remove something from the Startup folder.

Thanks!

Didn't see your response that msconfig works in safe mode - will try that - thanks.

I sure hope I can indeed get my money back. I renewed somewhere between 30-60 days ago, but given all the crap I have gone through waiting for a working product, they had better make an exception! I was trying my best to stay loyal, and kept giving them one more chance to get it right, but I am at the point where I just can't wait any longer - I need a working antispyware app now; one that doesn't lock up my machine (I just wonder what all the bad things these hard power offs are causing).

if you don't get a refund you could always give it as a birthday present. it works fine on the 99.9% of computers. it seems like you were just unlucky.

try pming AChen. its much faster than support

Given the responses on this forum, I think that 99.9% is waaaay too high a number. If there are this many people having problems on this forum, then you can bet there are tons more people who either didn't bother getting on here, or have no clue why their PC suddenly doesn't work properly. The problems on this forum are just the tip of the iceberg, regardless of what PC Tools marketing VPs say.

In any case, I will contact AChen; he seems to be very helpful. I am actually holding out (a small bit of) hope that I won't have to do this. I will probably wait until my 30-day eval of another product expires before doing anything, in the hopes that my problems can get resolved. I really, really, would rather stick with SD 5, but I just don't think it's going to work out.

Hi ajm,

We believe the lock-ups is due to the automatic updates as we've come across this recently and happens on some occasions. A fix will be released shortly for this.

Do send me a PM if you require further assistance.

What absolute and utter rubbish suggest you have a check around the net
and a few other forums, before making such a bold statement. 99.9%???????

not quite 99.9% but as the figures above show it works on most computers
