I hate to tell you (PC Tools) this, mostly because it's such an annoyance for me, but after my second attempt to move to v5.0 I've just uninstalled build 179 because my computer was running so slowly. After the uninstall it's all back to normal speed.

It wasn't web browsing that was the problem, I accept that, at least on my system, that is fixed in 5.0. My problems this time were things like the Windows task manager taking about 30 seconds to open. Other apps seemed much slower to open as well and sometimes just clicking on a folder would take a good few seconds to respond.

Right now I'm seriously looking for an alternative to SD because even SD4 uses more resources than I'm happy with.

all antispyware uses some resources and spyware doctor is one of the quietest. you could turn off onguard and just scan every day.

still the slowdown you experienced is unusual could you post your system stats and a screen shot (or two) of the processes in task manager

Have a look at :'Reported issues' on top.

Slowdown in different situations is one of the major issues concening SD5.

Im am running set ups with P4 1,8Gig 250 RAM to PD 3.0 1Gig RAM. As soon as SD is in the picture, stand alone or combined with AV = SLOW!

Well, as I said in my original post, I've uninstalled SD5 now so I can't post the info requested. Task manager screenshots would have been unlikely to help anyhow I suspect. I was watching them very carefully myself and, even when the system appeared to be stuck for a few seconds launching an application, the CPU was at nowhere near 100% (and to freeze the system it would need both CPUs maxed out). I suspect it's more likely some sort of lock contention on a shared data structure somewhere in the OS.

I fully understand that any antispyware program uses resources (I have a comp sci degree) but I've been using SD for about 18 months now and b179 was definitely slower for me than SD4. In fact the performance problem appeared when I upgraded from b177 (or was it b178?) to b179 so something in the very latest build doesn't seem to be working out for me.

Turning off all OnGuard stuff and only doing a nightly scan is an interesting suggestion, it's a good half way house and I might well end up doing that although for now I think I'll just drop back to SD4 and try again in another month or two.

Julian,

After much problems with version 5 I sent a message to Tech Support.

I was running symantec AV and SD5 keep installing its AV program. The tech gave me the link below to manage the plugins. After you uninstall and re-install go to this site and uncheck the AV plugin. Then do a update.

Hope this helps. My system seems to be back on track.

Ray

Can you please uninstall Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus and install Spyware Doctor again. I have included details below on how to do so.
*Note please visit http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/manageplugin/, to disable your antivirus plug in, this way AntiVirus will not be downloaded and installed via smart update.

Uninstall
_______

1. Ensure that you have fully exited the application. To fully exit from Spyware Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears. Please also close any instances of Internet Explorer or other browsers.
2. Perform an uninstall of Spyware Doctor from:
Start > Programs > Spyware Doctor > Uninstall Spyware Doctor 3. **IMPORTANT** Make sure that the Spyware Doctor folder (which by default would be under 'C:\Program Files') no longer exists. If the 'Spyware Doctor' folder still exists, please delete the folder.

Re-Install
______

1. Download Spyware Doctor directly from www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/
2. Install Spyware Doctor that was downloaded in step #1 above

Please see my post also about slow downs, it's slowing down to the point of ridiculous (no joke). Versio 4 and 5 doing it.

My system is:

2 X 1gb PC6400 ultra low latency
1 X Asrock Conroe Xfire mobo
1 X Conroe 6400 dual core
2 X 200gb in raid 0
onboard sound

I was tearing my hair out thinking my system was at fault and had upgraded mobo and cpu from an Epox MF570SLI (Am2 board) with X2 4600 dual core cpu thinking this was to blame, it's done exactly the same with this new setup. So it's definitely the software. It's a clean instal of windows yesterday and slow to boot (ridiculously slow), slow to browse, constant pausing with the system (when opening different folders, browser etc etc).

As above, I have uninstalled the software and the system is running properly now. So theres no doubt its a software issue.
