does anyone know how to make this disappear? other than hooking a hot cable up to it

ethernet, sorry, just assumed everyone knew what I was referring to

if you don't mind that the icon is missing even when connected to the network, open "Network and Dial-up Connection" from the ControlPanel. Select the LAN connection, and display its Properties page. At the botom of the page you should see a checkbox to display the icon in the tray, remove the mark.
