With the release of Spyware Doctor 5.0 et seq. the problem of AOSS not reading the USB with the latest refdb was solved by the refdb patch and the refdb image to burn a new CD. However, there is now (up to 0179) no refdb.dat included. How is refdb.dat to be obtained?

Hi
You could try saving another copy of the "refdb.bin" file as a .dat extension to see if that works. AOSS may (hopefully) be updated to function with the new version 5 database
Hope that helps

Thanks for the tip. Can you provide an exact procedure to make the file extension? Could you also tell me why your suggestion might work? As I understand it the refdb.bin file is an image file and burning the image makes a complete AOSS cd. This obviously contains a database, but I need it on my usb!

Hi
This is incorrect. The refdb.bin is the database file for SDv5. The image file for creating the AOSS cd is available for download here (http://www.pctools.com/aoss/details/) (you may have to review an EULA before accessing the download)
Instructions for database file transfer:
1. Open the System folder for Spyware Doctor (usually C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor)
2. Find the refdb.bin file
3. Copy the file to another location on your computer (e.g. "My Documents")
4. Right-click on the file and select rename
5. Change the ".bin" extension to ".dat" (Windows should complain about the possibilty of the file becoming unstable)
6. Move/Copy this refdb.dat file to your usb to use during scan
I cannot verify that the above instructions will allow you to use the database in this style, unfortunately I cant burn .ISO cd images to test this. Please let me know how you get on.

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I followed your instructions, booted AOSS, but it was unable to read the refdb.dat on the stick. Skipping the stick search resulted in db 305970 being used. It must be possible to get a refdb.dat update as this is the purpose of the stick search... but how?

Hi
Sorry to hear that. As that is the case, the only way to get updated refdb.dat files is through Spyware Doctor 4. Heres the link if you want to download that: www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/version4/

Hi John
I contacted PC Tools Support about this and they have said that they are working on a new version of AOSS that will recognise the definintions files from version5. Hopefully it will be out soon :)

Since this is taking a long time, how about a quick short term work-around...

Could SD 5 Smart Update include a refdb.dat file in addition to refdb.bin? I know that SD 5.0 wouldn't use the file, but since the file is being kept up-to-date for SD 4.x users, it would be nice if SD 5.0 users could get a copy so that their AOSS was current too.

Thanks

Dave

P.S. Or is there an URL or ftp site where I can always grab the latest copy?

The current (as of 3-Nov-2007) refdb.dat available for AOSS users in http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48618 is not working for me. Both WinXP compressed folder utility and Zipgenius tell me the ZIP file is corrupt.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Hi Bha,

I have updated the sticky thread. Please see http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48618 :)

Let me know if you are still having problems downloading the refdb.dat.
