At last I can enable file guard without causing a slowdown in my email management , thanks.

I do however still find that things really slowdown whilst scanning, even during the intel scan, which is really annoying if I'm surfing or moving around different windows at the time. Sheduling scans at night helps but I'm not sure that its a real solution

Hi
Are you using the ADS scanning? If so try disabling this feature to see if scan speed improves.

Which is not of course mentioned in the help (even the advanced help which is "online" does not have this mentioned (ie no mention of the "Scan Settings" under the settings menu)

I think PCTools need to
1) Identify if ADS is for normal Scan , or is also used by "On Guard"
2) If ADS is used by both, separate the usage, such that SCAN can use it, but on-guard does not (or give you the option as to where to use it)

Hi
As far as I am aware, ADS is only available in scans, not OnGuard.

Thats what I hoped

however ... the slowness of Fileguard makes you wonder if it does use ads as well.

I also wonder if fileguard scans all reads as well as writes (and to be honest I'd rather have this a configurable option) but it does not say anywhere I can see what it does.

I did just check my scan settings and had already disabled ADS as a potential slow-down source.

Hi PJWilkin
As far as I know, file guard does check all reads (its cpu usage increases if i scan with another spyware scanner)

Trevor
Are you using the AV plugin or SD standalone?

This is what I thought.

I think they need to "enhance" it to let you specify Fileguard as to whether it scans Reads, Writes, or both.

If my system is clean (as per the normal SCAN), then there is no benefit of "Fileguard" scanning all reads from my system's hard discs if they are already clean. Thus allowing my system to read things faster.

As for write scanning, this is expected (but there are some files you might want to exclude from this process).

Hi PJWilkin
I think the idea behind FileGuard is that if you unknowingly download/install malware and it uses DLL injection the fileguard will monitor whether the action taken is malicious and block it. On-demand scanning is alright, but real-time protection is better. To be honest, this feature was probably designed with the AV plugin in mind as this would make its AV function useless!

I am using SD with AV plugin. I removed Avast to avoid conflicts there

Hi Trevor
It could be the AV plugin then. Can you try disabling this and scanning? (Disable by going to Settings > Antivirus > uncheck "Enable full Antivirus integration" > Apply)

I been constantly updating my SD5 to the lastest release. Like others, it just a lame duck that do not fix some of recurring problem eg fail to start-up promptly. Remark like "waiting for spyware doctor engine to start" are one of common bug that require one to kick-start the software to proceed. Another inherent problem is that some scanners Browser and Start-up fail to initiate and remain stagnant at the process point.
Please is there any solution to get it going as I urgently need it to eradicate my
ADWARE VIRTUMONDE problem .

Thks

Hi
Try scanning in Safe Mode, as it may be that your infection is preventing SD from running properly.

I disabled the AVplug-in and scan time speeded up. A full scan took 15mins versus approx 2hours with the AV on. I hope this will be fixed soon as I want to keep my security software to a min but will reinstal Avast if the solution is not forthcoming

Hi
In your Antivirus settings, what detail was it set to scan? I have mine set to Fast (fullscan takes approx 1hr, intelliscan takes approx 3mins)

Thanks I set scan speed to fast and inteli scan took less than 2 mins, I'll see what happens on full scan but expect an increase in scan speed there too

In my experience, SD and Avast work well together. I am yet to read anything positive about the PCTools AV product, but hopefully they will get it right eventually, after they've completely fixed SD5!
