Hi:

I don't know if this is a Registry, SCSI or setup problem, a combination, or something else...

I transported three SCSI hard drives (1, 2 & 2 partitions) and a SCSI CD-ROM to a new motherboard. (The new setup leaves out a clicked-out Jaz drive, which was the i:\ drive with the old setup, and adds a new graphics board and a new sound board -- I know, it should have been one step at a time, but circumstances compelled otherwise.)

On booting, the Adaptec SCSI BIOS says all the drives, including the CD-ROM, are there. An Adaptec utility says they're set up correctly. (One drive is terminated.)

Norton File Manager sees them all, including the i:\ CD-ROM, but My Computer, Windows Explorer and other apps don't see the CD-ROM unless i:\ is entered on their command lines and a CD-ROM can then be viewed. In Explorer, the i:\ CD drive then appears at the top of the list -- but it's gone if Explorer is closed and reopened.

In Device Manager, the CD-ROM's properties say the "device is working properly."

I've removed and added the drives and CD-ROM drive, seperately and together. I've swapped cable connectors. I've taken the CD's letter assignment up to Z.

And the Update Driver Wizard can't find or list the (Win 98 2) CD....

Any help would be appreciated.

When I was puttting my burner in I had some trouble because telling it which one was the master and which one was the slave drive. So that might be the problem.

Ryan:

Well, yes; but this is SCSI which has no master/slave relationship, as such.

Strange. Did you reinstall the OS with the new motherboard?

Simon:

No, I didn't replace the the O/S with the motherboard.

The only difference is that I didn't put in a failed SCSI Jaz drive that was there with the old motherboard.

On booting the Adaptec BIOS reports:

SCSI ID LUN # 0:0 SEAGATE C: 80h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:4 SEAGATE D: 81h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:5 SEAGATE 82h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:6 Plextor

Whereas it used to read:

SCSI ID LUN # 0:0 SEAGATE C: 80h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:4 SEAGATE D: 81h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:5 SEAGATE E: 82h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:3 Jaz F: 83h
SCSI ID LUN # 0:6 Plextor 84h

All Norton programs can see it, i.e., when I File/Open it's there in the list, in the correct order.

No other programs show it in their lists -- My Computer & Explorer included -- but can see it if I enter F:\. When I do this in Windows Explorer it goes to the top of the list, and is gone the next time I open Explorer.

Strange indeed.

Ah..... There's genius for you! Thanks!

That was it. I haven't looked at tweakui for years, but I must have used it to turn the faulty jaz drive off.

Thank you.
