When I had version 5.0.176 everything was fine up until I automatically was upgraded to version 5.0.177 then I start getting repeated popus after each start or reboot saying that I need to reboot to complete the updates installation.

I tried to update manually and i get error message saying that I can not receive any new updates until I reboot to complete the previous updates installation.

This is crazy, many people are having a lot of problems with this "so called" 5 stars award winning(?) best antispyware in the world and it can not install updates properly!!

I don't need excuses... what I need from support is a solution to fix this problem, thats what they are there for.

You are wasting your time. You will find you will not generally find forthcoming responses from PC Tools. Rather than admit they failed, they try to justify their failure by comparing their problems to Vista's problems.

Well, this problem, for me at least, began with v176 and has been ongoing.

In some thread here, I posted, in part, the following on 03/19/2007 @ 12:23 AM:

"And, this release was, imho, premature and ill-timed. It is, clearly, still (and should have 'officially' remained) beta in it's present state. Chock so full of bugs as to be, uh - almost, unusable. But, that's just my opinion. My prediction is that PCTools will, ultimately, regret their decision .. if they don't already."

And, though it's certainly much better now than "almost unusable" ... I think the polished "release version" I'm looking for/expected, post beta, remains too far in the future, for me anyway. My renewal approaches and I've no desire to revert back to v4 or continue beta-testing v5. Three days ago, I installed SpySweeper on my machine. I like it's interface. It's function is flawless. It updated without problem. Initial testing and research indicate it is very strong at doing what it is designed to do. Yesterday, I bought a 2 year subscription.

I find no fault with those from PCTools who're attempting to help here, on this forum, and appreciate your efforts. I'll look again at SD somewhere down the road.

Over and out.

I did not know that Spyware doctor version 5.0 was a BETA (??!!) according to many people on this Forum BUT... It would be UNETHICAL for me for any software company to automatically Update (or Upgrade) an existing software with a BETA Update (or version Upgrade) without letting the customer know it is a BETA (many customwers woukld not like to be used as testers without their consent).

The fact is that AFTER the Upgrade to version 5.0 (regardless of any updates like 0.176 or 0.177, etc...) Spyware Doctor has become very UNSTABLE in several aspects. Version 4.0 was working fine in almost all aspects BUT you don't accomplish anything by going back to version 4.0 because then (I guess) version 5.0 will be downloaded automatically as an Update.

I agree that PCTools' tech support is giving many excuses for not being able to fix the problems specially the constant pop ups asking you to reboot to finish the installation of some updates (and you can not update manually untill the previous updates are fully installed).

I followed the advise mof some customers that praised Spysweeper as being more consistent and stable than Spyware Doctor and I downloaded and installed the trial version for 15 days and I'm checking it to see it it is as good as they say. Furthermore, My SD subscription will expire in 16 days and if SD does not provide a fix for the pop ups problem , then... GOODBYE Spyware Doctor, I will not renew and will buy Spysweeper.

Well thats exactly what I did spysweeper loads much faster than SD4. And on first scan found a few things that SD4 missed.Cannot comment on SD5 as every version trashed my computer, but have stopped my subscription. And until now spysweeper seems to be working well. And like you think SD5 was not ready for public release, just to many problems.I can understand the odd
one or two,and myself have never had a problem with any other software as
much as SD5.And IMHO SD5 was rushed out for VISTA and thats all, then for us the public to further beta test.

SD V5 is not a Beta product the programme was released commercially in Mid March - build 169 was the first commercial build.
Many people using this forum feel it was released too early myself included.
I used V5 up until build 176 but have been unable to run 176 & 177 due to new issues which seem to have been introduced with these new builds and have gone back to V4.
On a second PC my daughter has kept with V4 all along.
V4 will not try to download version V5 or nag you to update at least not at the moment, it just downloads the latest signature databases via smart update as it has always done so this is a possible short term solution for you as it is for me.

As to your problem have you some other security software installed which could be stopping the update installing if so it could be worth starting the computer with this disabled to see if it allows the update to install, or even restarting in safe mode.

Possibly if you were to download a copy of 177 from the PC tools website, then shutting down and SD uninstalling ensuring the spyware doctor folder is removed during the uninstall (C:\programme files\ spyware doctor) before re-installing it could solve the problem
Personally I'd opt for installing V4 at least until the next build is out.

As for SpySweeper, it didn't work for me at all the PC just ground to a halt with it installed, available memory dropped from 500mb with SD installed to about 250 mb. Nothing wrong with the programme just my configuration which just illustrates how difficult it is to produce a security product which works for all.

Having said that clearly there are too many issues with V5 at present but hopefully they are being addressed and we will see an improvement over the coming weeks.

But hey at least with your experience with SpySweeper you have a good alternative.
