View Full Version : Spyware Doctor 5 vs Nod32 2.7
Nod32 and Spyware Doctor have expanded so that they now appear 100% overlapping and are no longer required to complement each other. If so, does anyone care to contrast and compare Spyware Doctor 5 w/ AV and Nod32 2.7, particularly in terms of Vista? I am running SD5 on two XP computers so far and I am pleased.
Thanks!

I don't think NOD32 is an anti-spyware program: in fact, it's never caught a thing on any of my PCs (unlike SD4 which has frequently had to remove various bits of spyware).
Thanks for the kind reply. The website for Nod32 2.7 claims to provide a complete solution, but I agree that Nod32 antispyware capabilities are ceratainly unproven, and historically nobody has been able to match the antispyware detection capabilities of SD. Basic antivirus detection appears to be easier.

Many anti-virus programs are now becoming all in-one-solutions to cover all types of malware as well. They usually don't include dealing with minor annoyances and 'low level' threats, eg.tracking/advertising cookies, which a dedicated anti-spyware program does.
I use KAV with all extended databases enabled for spyware/adware/riskware etc, and it is very capable in these areas.
It is best backed by by a dedicated anti-spyware program, even if it is just for additional scanning purposes, as no program will be 100% in detecting and removing all malware.

I use KAV but also still recommend having an on-demand second anti-spyware program. The question is, which one to use. So far I haven't read any convincing reviews on the new versions of the anti-spyware programs so which to use is still up in the air. CNET did one but based on the rankings it should be considered suspicious at best.

It's all down to personal choice IMO everybody has different views on what is good and what is bad in this department.
You may like to give SuperAntispyware a whirl. It is more known amongst the 'geek' community, and is maybe not as 'pretty' as some of the flashier marketed products, but it is pretty powerful and is renowned for removing difficult spyware that has a tendancy to reinstall itself.
I think all those that like the opinion of a few scanners should add the free Home Users Edition to their security arsenal of on-demand scanners.
There is also a paid version with real-time monitoring and quite a few customisable options, light on resources, with a fully functional trial so you can try before you decide to part with any cash and it is recommended by many users on the Kaspersky forum for co-habiting very nicely with KAV.
If your at a 'cross-roads', not knowing what way to turn at the moment, you've nothing to loose! :)

Thanks for the info, I will check in to it. Anyone know about Prevx?
OUTTA HERE!

I know that six months ago Prevx1 removed a nasty browser hijacker that Spyware Doctor (v4) couldn't.

I run Spyware Doctor v5 and Nod32 v2.7 at the same time without any trouble. As expected, Spyware Doctor catches more spyware.
However, a friend of mine at work had trouble with a nasty piece of something. I put Spyware Doctor (v4 at the time) on his system, and it found the offending software, and supposedly removed it. Unfortunately, the spyware/virus was still there after a reboot. I installed Nod32 on his system, and it was able to completely remove the offending software. I uninstalled both programs, and recommended that he purchase both of them, as I find them a very effective team.
I continue to use both Nod32 v2.7, and Spyware Doctor v5, and I am happy with both programs. I do wish SDv5 would get its act together wish some issues though. While I normally use Firefox, SDv5's slow performance with IE7 is unacceptable.
My understanding is that NOD32 scans files for spyware so should prevent you downloading infected files to your PC. But it won't stop everything and won't be able to remove spyware if your PC is infected.
I'm currently running NOD32 and Zone Alarm anti-spyware (V6.5, NOT V7) on my laptop. I have the anti-spyware disabled, but run a scan every week and have never found anything other than tracking cookies. (I bought ZA just for the firewall.) So NOD32 seems to be stopping spyware getting onto the PC.
I don't have ZA on my home PCs as I have a good firewall on the network.
My philosophy is not to run more security software than I need, and I've avoided all-in-one security suites after a very nasty experience with Norton 2006. But I suspect that this is the way security software is heading due to the increasing compatibility issues.

Hi
Im quite happily running SDv5 with AV plugin, ZoneAlarm Antispyware v7 and Windows Defender all without any hiccups. I also use Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot S&D as on-demand antispyware scanners.
I am currently contemplating using BitDefender v8 as an on-demand virus scanner (SD+AV doesnt offer this) as I use bittorrent and like to know if files are infected.

I would suggest using Kaspersky or NOD32 instead of BitDefender.

He's using Bitdefender 8 as on-demand not realtime. And BitDefender is a pretty good AV.
I use Kaspersky, and I love it.

mjg424 probably wouldn't be able to use either of these with SD5+AV Plugin without conflicting issues arising from having 2 AV's.

He, He, I love it too.
I don't usually fall in love with security apps., (maybe there has been the odd infatuation with others in the past LOL), but this one is a little gem! :D

Hi
The only reason i chose BitDefender v8 is its FREE and as far as I know does not have a real-time function so (fingers-crossed) no conflicts with SD+AV!:)

I tried BitDefender last year, and its real-time protection just killed my PC.

I tried BitDefender 8 Free Edition...removed it virtually immediately as it used far too many processes and memory (no conflicts with SD+AV though)

Ah well mjg424, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Perhaps there is something out there somewhere that will suit your purpose. Keep searching! :)

I'm hoping that PC Tools will manage to fix SD5+AV so we can use it in real time. Mind you, I don't think it's recognised by Windows Security Center yet, and that will annoy the heck out of many users.

Hi
I am currently using SD+AV and on XP Sp2 it is recognised by security centre as an antivirus. It would still be nice to have integration into Windows Explorer for on-demand "right-click and scan". Unfortunately using PCTAV for on-demand (OnGuards all off) didnt work as it used far too much memory.

Oh good, thanks for the correction. Just have to wait and see how v5 pans out then before I take the plunge!
