Hello everyone, can anyone recommend a good strategy for deploying win98 roaming profiles using an NT4 server?
I have read the technet article reguarding this and I am unsure about a few things. After I have created a desktop and prog configuration I want for my test user, the article recommends that I copy this to the users home folder and rename it to user.man and then copy this profile to every machine that the user will logon too??? Can this be right? It seems laborious to have to copy a mandatory profile to every machine as well as the users home folder, is there not a better way? What if i then change the profile, I'll have to rename and recopy the profile to every machine again??

Any suggestions are appreciated and thanks in advance :o)

I have set up several NT-Win98/5 networks using the roaming profiles, the last one being 600 users so like yourself I didn't fancy copying all the user profiles by hand. All you need is a quick batch script to copy the user.man into the users home folders. No need to put it on the local machines. To create a user.man file.. create your user and their account, set the policies to your liking, log the user on, then off, look in their home folder and you'll find a user.dat file. Rename to user.man and thats your profile created.

As for making changes to your policy, yep, you have to do it all again so make sure its right first time. Most of the security and Windows settings are implemented through the policy editor and the config.pol file. The main reason for renaming to user.man is so that users can't change their own settings
Edited by Spyderman on 02/07/01 15:56.

Hello my name is Paul and I am a student at Aston Uni.

I have a visual impairment which means that I need everything big. However Aston have a Unix network that runs win98, mac OS 8.6 via a Samba server and Solaris 8, so when I log into my work area, the machine does not set everything big (ie res=640x480, large fonts, icons etc.)

I was wondering if you know of a way to setup a roaming profile. If not then do you know of anyone who does. Also do you know how I can use a registry file in win98 to change the resolution so that I don't need to use the display dialog?

Please can you reply to me saying if you know or don't know at maguirpd@aston.ac.uk or to my forum address.

Thanks

Paul
