View Full Version : Is V5 update usable or still not ?

I dropped V5 due various problems especially with uTorrent , Tor , slow FireFox speed and a lot of crap like that and returned to V4.
I haven't visited this forum for few weeks and now I see new version is released.
I do not want to go over the hell of installing/uninstalling V5 again and the changelog looks quite small and inadequate to the problems raised.
So my question to the users is V5 become usable or not.
P.S.: I noted this: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46412 thread and it made me feel uncomfortable.
No I am not competitor in any form and by the PCTools sake I hope they do not call me - paying customer "silly person" .
My problem with it that it's easy to find couple of "competitors" posts and convince yourself that everything is fine "it's just competitors" , while in reality V5 is completely unusable for majority of the customers.

I am curous here as well. Before I re-install v5 and go through hell again I would like to hear from more people if it is actually working.

Hi Lord KiRon and gaucho91
Currently many users are finding the current release of version 5 to be very good. The current version is 5.0.0.176 and is available from: www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/
PC Tools have removed two OnGuard tools from v5 to work on them, they are Email Guard and Site Guard. Cookie Guard from v4 has been implemented in v5 to protect against malicious cookies while Site Guard is being redeveloped.
I would advise waiting until April 3rd when these OnGuards are re-released before installing v5. V4 is still supported and is available here (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/version4/)
Hope that helps

Thanks , I will be waiting then.
Btw: if I remember correctly my problems were not gone even after disabling all "OnGuard" components, only shuting down SDv5 restored my system to the usable state.
Hope developer take this into account when fixing.

Shutting down v5 didn't even work for me. I had to uninstall it before my computer went back to normal.

Hi
I believe both your problems may be related to the new LSP used by SD. Modifications have been made and many users have found FF and IE7 to be quicker now (there have still been reports of problems with thunderbird mail client)

Sorry but what is LSP ?

Hi
Sorry, LSP is Layered Service Provider. Basically it is a filter for all internet traffic, used by SD to decide if something is malicious or not.

Hi
As the 1st April is a Sunday, the team at PC Tools are likely to be at home! To be honest i was expecting a release on Monday 2nd but Tuesday will be just fine :)

OK, decided to try it (newer version) after all.
Installed , updated ,scanned , found 13 cookies, removed and hit the "x" button on top right corner to close and ...
got this:

Not pretty huh ...
Now rebooted and so far runs more or less fine (at least FireFox gives normal speed and I can open uTorrent UI)
BUT SD5 icon is nowhere to be found in tray even if I run SD manually the dialog comes but no tray icon .... :(
So I'd say it's improvement but still buggy and this given it loss 1/2 of the OnGuard functionality ...
But I guess it's OK for me no since I needed it mostly as scanner/remover anyway.
If no more unpleasant surprises will pop up over time it actually become useful.
Btw: what's "kernel compatibility mode" and should I enable it ?

Hi
Kernel compatibility mode is designed for better integration with other security programs. It may be of some use for you (im running it regardless!)
Can I just ask are you running Vista?

I spent countless hours installing, uninstalling, scanning, loading updates, etc., etc. Then this guy gets on here and accuses us of being "competitors". Look "pal", I don't know how you got all the magazine rave reviews and endorsements from major radio shows, but I hope you at least consider returning some of the money you are STEALING from people with a product that doesn't work.
Sign me as another poor "schlub" who was duped by all the hyped up advertising you folks do out there.
Oh yeah........"have a nice day".....you've made mine pure hell.

Been running SD 5.0.0.176 for three days now with no problems at all. It's been running just as good as version 4 did. :D
