Well, prior to updating this morning to v5.176 ... I was running b174 and the update was performed via smart update. Build 174 had only performed two updates, neither required reboot. However, after b176's call for reboot, SD immediately announced another update was available. The single file, "File Filter Driver 19.81Kb", was there and I downloaded it. SD called for another reboot, which I did. Immediately it again announced another update .. well, great. It displays the same file again, "File Filter Driver 19.81Kb" ... hmm, that's not good. Download it again, immediate call for another reboot, which I did. Right back to update available again .. guess which file. I've not downloaded it a third time, yet. Anyone else seeing this?

Hi
This was an issue with a previous update named "objec model" during the BETA testing period, however, i have not received this file through smart update on build 176 and smart update says no new updates available

Hi mjq424,

Well, whatever program timer/trigger that re-announces an available update went off just after posting my message. Must have been an hour plus since I last refused to download it a third time. It's still there.

edit: btw, don't know if I'll keep it selected yet, or not, but I've also ENABLED the new "kernel compatability mode" .. I missed that reboot. I read the sticky info about this and still am unsure what it's doing. Since b174 was doing well with everything else I'm running, maybe I should disable this .. huh? Anyone else played with this switch?

kernel compatibility mode is only necessary if spyware doctor is conflicting with your av (you would notice if it was)

Well, it's bout 16 hours later. The file is still attempting to download. I intend to try it again along with whatever else appears via smart update. If that doesn't correct it, possibly an uninstall/reinstall from the b176 online file. Thing is, by all indications, download/install appear normal. I don't know if the file is being successfully installed and smart update isn't picking that up or the file isn't installing properly, for whatever reason, and smart update is, correctly, resending it. Other than this little problem, v5.176 is doing good.

One other little thing I'll report. Using v5.174, I was seeing a 30+ second delay at the logon screen before I could begin typing my password (the field wouldn't accept entry). Never had seen this behavior before. Upon updating to v5.176, it quit and reverted to normal.

After updating to version 5.00176, smartupdate keeps advising me to reboot before downloaded updates can be installed. I have rebooted of course after downloading and installing the updates which was an updated filter if I recall correctly.

Each time I start IE 7, it keeps asking me to reboot, I can click this message away, but maybe there is a work around to let it finish the update routine ?

Also I noticed that this version of Spyware doctor keeps blocking Active sync, no matter whether I allowed it manually or added it to the exclusions. For now to circumvent this I have de-installed active synch and removed my PDA.

I just installed .176 upgrade, and every time my computer reboots, Spyware Doctor tells me I need "reboot required to install updates". Then when I reboot - SD still gives me the same message. I can't get rid of it, nor can I install any updates because I'm supposed to "reboot" in order to continue, and rebooting does nothing to remove the message! Please help! Thanks.

i'm afraid i have the same problem. .176 always says 'reboot required' to install updates. very frustrating. did not have this problem with .174.

browser startup appears to be a bit slower in .176 than in .174 as well.

sigh.

I turned off the "automatic install of updates" option, and instead "prompt for updates". SD keeps wanting to install the "File Filter Driver" a 19.81kb install. Everytime I select "yes" to install this annoying driver, it asks me to reboot Windows. When I reboot, SD asks me AGAIN whether I want to install the same "File Filter Driver" (19.81kb install). And so it's a never-ending problem.

Please fix this!!

Ah, thank you for articulating the specifics. It is exactly the problem I too have reported. Comforting conformation it's not something specific to my machine, but instead an SDv5 related glitch. Waiting on a rumored major update, on the 3rd I think was the claim, to see if it corrects this problem.

Hi Guys,

We have tried to recreate the re-boots inhouse, but were not able to get the re-boots to occur after an Update. We've tested this on multiple machines. It seems that the file "File Filter Driver 19.81Kb" is not installing itself once the PC has booted up, requiring the re-boot after another update. It would be great if you could provide the version number of this file on your system. The file is located at: "%system32%\drivers\ikfileflt.sys".

Are you guys also using Windows XP? or Vista?

Once we receive this info, we'll investigate this further.

Hi,

Well, the file you've indicated ikfileflt.sys doesn't exist on my machine (I even searched it). I do, however, have these three that are in the ball-park;

ikfilesec.sys
iksysflt.sys
iksyssec.sys

I'm using XP Pro, fully patched.

Hi,

Ok, I and, at least, another have provided the info.

Tonight, with V5 reporting no update for 4 days, I allowed the latest "daily" update, along with the problem FFDriver. It promptly installed, called for a reboot and when finished, it announced another update ... my old friend, it's still there.

I'm not sure this is relevant but I've discovered a couple of things digging around my system. First I found a registry entry stating that there was a pending rename of a temp file to the missing file (ikfileflt.sys) in the spyware doctor tmp directory. When I looked, sure enough it was there. I tried renaming it and moving it to the system32/drivers folder but to no avail.

I also noticed a PC Tools Spyware Doctor service that wouldn't start. When I clicked on the log it mentioned that a file couldn't be found. Clicking on the details referred to netevent.dll, but that file wasn't missing so I'm not sure what it was referring to.

I gave up on 5.0 and reverted back to version 4 and, lo and behold, the service started up correctly. It makes me wonder if the service was a version 4 service that didn't get un-installed when I installed version 5 and was, therefore, interfering somehow with version 5. Obviously speculation on my part but perhaps it will help you to identify the problem.

SDv4 does not use services to start, it is an autostart application. Perhaps a full uninstall of v4 and reinstall v5 to see if that works?
Hope that helps

SD5.0.0.177 self-installed this morning on bootup. unfortunately....the 'reboot required' issue persists, because i did reboot, but it still says it needs a reboot.

the 'solution', which worked for .176 as well, was simply to uninstall SD5 and download the full package from the downloads page.

I also experienced Spyware Doctor updates where, after updating and re-entering Smart Update, it wanted to update the same modules agina. In my case, Zone Alarm 7.0 was seeing the Spyware Doctor downloaded modules as viruses and was putting then in quarantine. Solution (for me): disable Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware while doing Spyware Doctor Smart Updates.

I believe i saw a thread regarding this previously and AChen remarked that he would check this out. However I have not had any detection issues with either of these two programs. Try adding the dll as an exception, see if that helps.

Hammer

I could add the DLL to the exception list, but it might still quarantine the temporary files which would interfere with the installation.

Hello all,
I have the latest version of SWD and all I can download is the same 2 files, File filter driver -19.81 kb
System filter driver - 29.75 kb.

I also have the reboot issue when I do get an update that I can install and I need to reboot again.

Can I guess that there is a fix in the works???

Also, the tech support page in the web site seem to be broken.

Any hints or suggestions???

In regards to the constant reboots problem, it appears that the File Filter Driver update for Spyware Doctor is not being initialized after the reboot, this may be caused by another application removing file before Spyware Doctor is able to process it.

As Anthony has previously said the issue has been escalated to our Developers for further investigation, could you try closing all other applications running, update Spyware Doctor, when you are prompted to reboot then do so.

thanks

The file that "Smart Update" says is ready to download is "System Filter Driver" and it is 29.75kb. That is a small file, and it should download pretty fast with my cable connection, but it appears to download instantly. I wonder if the filter driver file could be corrupted? I don't know what the program would do if it tried to download a corrupted file and was unable to install it. Just a thought. . . .

For what is worth, I have Zone Alarm on my laptop and tried "kernal compatability mode" after experiencing many issues. It did not appear to rectify the problems or any conflicts and made boot-up even slower. It locked-up even more often while launching start-up applications. I agree, if it was just about a non-working program.
Mistakes are made by anyone and might be forgiven if properly corrected.

In this case it is unfortunately not only the programme that is not accordng to the standard of previous versions (V4), but a company ethic, marketing, renewals, support etc wich are not what should be.

As the situation is at the moment, they could belly ower without me crying, but they deserve a LIMMITED time to correct. And the clock is ticking!

Spyware Doctor told me it had a version update besides the System Filter Driver that it's been trying to download for the last month and that I had to reboot to install it. After reboot I was on version 182 instead of 179.
When I checked "Smart Update" it had 5 (five) files to download! After downloading them SD restarted but it also told me a reboot was necessary! After a reboot it showed the same 5 files still had to be downloaded! That's where it's sitting now. It shows the same 5 driver files to be downloaded over and over.

For those that are experiencing this reboot problem, it is generally due to another application removing the Spyware Doctor update files before the reboot and so Spyware Doctor will need to download these files again.

Could you please complete the steps below to download the files manually.

1. Shutdown Spyware Doctor by right clicking the Spyware Doctor icon located in the system tray.

2. Got the link below and download and save the SD_Drivers.zip file

http://support.pctools.com/manager/downloads.php?file=SD_Drivers.zip

3. Extract the 5 files from SD_Drivers.zip and place them in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

4. Reboot your computer

Can you confirm that Spyware Doctor no longers asks for the reboot.

Hi AChen,
Tried your suggestion with the zip file of sys files. Problem one was SD5 wouldn't shut down correctly with message telling me so. Tried again - shut down. Copies files & re-booted. SD5 didn't start. Started it manually, tried claimed it couldn't, error 1060. Uninstalled SD5 & re-booted, re-installed, updates downloaded okay in 2 batches. No re-boot requested, no available updates. Hooray, I kept being prompted for 5 sys files (in your zip). Incidently, uninstalling SD5 removed the sys files I'd previously copied into folder but all now back in folder. Hope it's some help.

yep it should be very simple to remove that problem but it persist for month now. Even in the previus release. You can pray that they use some hours to fix this simple but very annoying problem before your assignment payperiod is over.

Can you confirm that Spyware Doctor no longers asks for the reboot.

so with this reply i can expect that i can't get the newest program and virusdatabase by autodownload? What a nice protections this is.

I've had a reply from PC Tools Tech Support and it appears to be working.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting PC Tools.

Regarding your query, I am sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing.

This problem may be resolved with a complete reinstall of Spyware Doctor.

Please complete the following steps to completely reinstall Spyware Doctor 5.0:

1. Close running Spyware Doctor

* Right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows taskbar) and select 'Shutdown' from the menu that appears.

Please also close any instances of Internet Explorer or other browsers.

2. Perform an uninstall of your current version of Spyware Doctor from:
Start > Programs > Spyware Doctor > Uninstall Spyware Doctor

3. Restart PC

4. *IMPORTANT* Make sure that the Spyware Doctor folder (which by default would be under 'C:\Program Files') no longer exists. Also under 'C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\PC Tools' directory.

If the 'Spyware Doctor' folder still exists, please delete the folder.

5. Download Spyware Doctor Release 5.0 from:
http://www.pctools.com/downloads/sdsetup.exe

6. Install the file that was downloaded in step 5.

7. Restart PC

I do not believe this is a simple task to fix. If you have been reading the thread, you will see that some other application appears to be removing these driver files. May be quite difficult to pin point what is actually causing it. I agree that its been a while but don't you think that if they had a fix for this, it would have been released already.

Have you tried the suggestion from the moderator as this seems to fix the problem.

Iīm begining to regret buying this software.....
For month now the program is unable to update itīs database.
When I try to update manualy It says "REBOOT REQUIRED"
I bought this bechause I donīt want any spyware on my computer.
If the program canīt get any updates, whats the use to have it running?
The company seemes to be unable to solve this. Shame on you!!!

If you have problems with SD 5 I suggest using SD 4.1
I've been using it for a while with no problems, reports from other ppl on this forum are mostly positive too.
Disregard what I just said if you are already using 4.1 :)

By going through this very long thread, you can see that something is removing these driver files not allowing them to install (another security program could be detecting these as a False Positive), thats why SD will prompt you to re-download those files after a reboot, causing a loop of reboots. I've been running SD version 5 for a while now and I still haven't come across this problem. I also use Norton with no probs.

Try the suggestion above to see if it helps. Also let us know how it went.

Thanks for the suggestion AChen, Anthony, & Petertron 5000. Unfortunately, SD still keeps giving me the same 5 files to download, and reboot, download, and reboot, well, you get the picture. This method did not work for me.

Remove SD5 which is beta sw. Run CCleaner and AMUST Registry Cleaner 3.5to get registry into some kind of order then install SD4 or SD4.1 if you are game. GOOD LUCK!

This issue has been resolved, however, we discovered a minor bug yesterday with version 186, with the notifier asking users to reboot, but has since been fixed. Which version of SD are you using? Click on Help|About. In order to get the fix, you'll need to uninstall/re-install Spyware Doctor 5.0.1.205.
