I use ZoneAlarm version:6.5.737.000, Spyware Doctor 4.0.0.2621, WinXP Home. Everything has been working OK.

A had a popup from ZA saying that there was a security update available. I downloaded the update and double-clicked to install. Before the install started, I got a popup saying that the update would not be compatible with SD, and advised me to update SD.

I did the "Smart Update" for SD. The version number remained the same. Tried the ZA update again. Same message. So presumably ZA wants me to update to version 5 of SD.

I don't intend to update either ZA or SD until I get some advice from forums ;)

Can anyone advise?

Im running ZoneAlarm (free firewall) version 7.0.337.000 with SD+AV version 5.0.0.176 with no conflicts. Im not sure how compatible the ZAISS is with SDv5
Hope that answers your question

Hello AlanDavidson,

I have the same ZA & SD and I've been checking out the SD forum and the ZA forum, and I've decided to sit tight with my working system until the dust settles on the problems both SD and ZA are having. I can't see any need to rush into any update that is obviously having problems. Maybe in a few months, both will have updates that work, and the installation problems will have been fixed.

I certainly don't think my system is compromised by staying with my present versions, and I haven't found any reason to suspect that ZA or SD will stop supporting my current versions with malware definitions.

I'm sure the upgrades are driven by Microsoft's Vista, and the problem of maintaining backwards compatibility with XP is what is causing all the problems. V6.5 of ZA and 4.0 of SD are fully functional applications for a mature operating system. If you're not planning to change to Vista, why make any changes? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I had similar situation when I tried to do an auto update of ZA and it gave me the message that I needed to update SD (obviously to v5) to be able to update ZA.
I never realized that both software work hand in hand to such degree.
Now, as long as SD v5 is a mess, I will not be able to have security updates from ZA.
It is getting impossible to stay with SD, any version!

Hi AlanDavidson,

Since we are occassional partners with Zone Alarm, Im not surprised by that courtesy update message for Spyware Doctor (SD).

The Spyware Doctor smart update feature is able to update the software itself but does not provide the ability to upgrade to a new version release.
You can upgrade to Spyware Doctor 5.0 by first uninstalling 4.0, then visiting http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/ to download/install 5.0.

Please note

I currently use ZA 7.0.337.000 and did not receive the prompt to upgrade SD when using its smart update. if you prefer to stay with SD 4.0, you can upgrade to the ZA version above instead. Here's the link... http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1025_update/zlsSetup_70_337_000_en.exe

I wish I could say that ZA installation worked. I downloaded the link mentioned above and when I ran the install, ZA repeated the message that it will not install until SD is updated first.
Back to the drawing board.

Hi webmast,

Thanks for discovering this. I think Im a little rusty in my tech skills :)

looks like the upgrade path is SD 5.0 then to ZA 7.0.337.000.
