View Full Version : ScanReg Inifinite Loop?

I crashed my Windows 98 machine and now it seems to be stuck in a ScanReg inifinite loop. This happened when I first installed Windows 98 and my solution was to re-install Windows. I let Windows try and repair itself, however, I finally got tired of the loop and took things into my own hands. I ran SCANDISK and found errors (FAT tables didn't match, the results of the fatal lockup I suppose) and repaired them. However, SCANREG tried to restore the registry a few times and I'm sure it was creating garbage until I corrected the disk errors. I was able to finally (after trying MANY different things for a couple of hours @ least!) get the machine to start in Safe Mode (bypassing the ScanRegW that happens on startup), then I disabled the ScanRegW, however, this is rather like turning off the safety on a holodeck programme and I consider myself riding by the seat of my pants (according to Microsoft). I'm sure this is corruption of a registry key, but have yet to localize the problem. Any suggestions or helpful hints?

Thanx in advance!
Wil

Since you had ScanDisk errors, your backup sets of the registry could also be corrupted. ScanReg is finding damaged files every time, and it tries to repair them. Boot to Command Prompt Only and try the command scanreg /fix. It may be able to repair the registry and stop this from happening. If that doesn't work, try using the system.1st file to restore the registry. As for computing by the seat of your pants, you are absolutely right. As soon as you get this resolved, turn that Registry Checker back on!
