It doesn't work,
straight out it just doesn't work.

> It corrupted my OS.
> It wouldn't remove the items it found; even in safe mode scanning without network.
> It bluescreened my pc running xp.
> The GUI just sat there a spinning ghost, without using any CPU resources on my Win 2K machine and couldn't be gotten rid of.
> It freezes when I hit the 'fix checked' system eight times now and I have to power off to get my machine back again.
> My OS is now hanging on programs and web pages and then releasing intermittently (and it bluescreened again today.)

My laptop is unusable after this fiasco. My 2K desktop managed to survive so far.
I trusted you guys.

Suggestions?

Hi Kroenig

Sounds really bad but it still seems like you're talking about 'Spyware Doctor' (see http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46334) which has an option to fix checked items following a scan.

By default 'PC Tools Antivirus' quarantines detected items without user intervention.

Hi Kroenig,

Are you referring to SD+AV plugin or PCTAV?

I may be confused on the 'fix checked' but I'll go back and look. I know it's Antivirus that freezes, bluescreens, sits doing nothing and won't close. Just ran PCT AV all it says is "Preparing files tables" for 20 minutes now on my 2K machine and hasn't scanned a single file. Funny, AVG works fine with PCT AV installed, wonder why.

is now refusing to cancel scan and has taken 10 minutes to shut down on 2K machine. Still not shut down.

and PCTAV hasn't shut down, just sits. Won't close, won't minimize. Currently running Memtest on XP Laptop that was buggered:eek: by the same. UBCD may come in handy after all.

Are you running two anti-virus programs at once? Bad idea!!!

AVG + PCTAV?

you might want to choose which one would you like to use...

it will definetly cause conflict (in the long run at least)

Hi socrfan & BT-X

You could search other posts from inflxshn for more info re PCTAV problems he was experiencing.

I asked him about installation of more than one anti-virus scanner some days ago in this thread:
http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46334
4th post down. 3/. Are you sure there are no other active (or even incompletely uninstalled) AV or other security software running concurrently?

Understood.

I've had SD 4 running alongside five other antivirus/spyware (AVG AV and AVG Antispyware included) programs on several machines successfully for the last year with no conflicts. I do this because no one program removes all the serious infections. I rarely if ever have any spyware/viruses on my computers, occasionally one will get through. Once a week or so I will scan my machines with each program just to keep an eye on the installs; they've always run smooth. I've been meticulous about watching for interactions between the various softwares and none ever occur. When this fiasco started I disabled/uninstalled everything but PCTAV or it's individual components on my two remaining machines (depending on what I had installed at the time.) It became immediately apparent it was specifically a PCT issue, at least in regards to my configurations. The only problem I've ever experienced with cross conflicts is typically Adaware SE Personal tends to see Noadware as an infection. Many people believe multiple Anti X programs conflict with each other, I found by testing them against each other on dozens of computers, very few ever do, your experience may differ.

Hi CRUNCH,

This may be related to the DPI settings. Could you please check by going to Control Panel-> Display-> Settings-> Advanced-> DPI settings (check what it is set to. For AV to be displayed properly, it will need to be set to 96 DPI). I have added this as a feature request to allow the 120 DPI settings.

Also ensure the following. Go to c:\Program Files\PC Tools AntiVirus, right click pctav.exe-> compatibility, ensure everything is unchecked.

Most any top rated and updated anti-virus program will catch whatever is out there on it's own so running two or more is not only a waste of time and resources it's also a set up for potential conflicts between the two. Running two anti-spyware programs is usually a good idea and won't, in most cases, cause problems.
