This error started after my machine crashed while loading a game from CD. I'm running WIN98. If I leave my machine idle for 5 minutes or so I always get an error box with "Explorer" in the blue bar at the top and the message: "This program has performed and illegal operation and will be shutdown..."

I can click a "Details>>" button inside this error box and it says: "Explorer caused and exception 6d007fH in module WEBCHECK.DLL at..." The module changes, WEBCHECK.DLL, SHELL32.DLL, and so on. When I close this box. The application that is running terminates and the Icons in my status line at the lower right go away except for the clock and Sound icons. After that I can use my machine as if nothing is wrong as long as I'm using either the mouse or keyboard. I never get this messages while I'm actively using the machine--only when I leave it idle--as if when Explorer is trying to cache current applications it hits a snag. This happens whether I'm on the net or not. Scandisk ran clean, Defrag tells me it is not necessary, and System File Check reported that url.dll was corrupt or has changed. Didn't replace it as I was unsure if this was changed by a valid program. InnoculateIT finds no virus. Any Suggestions?

you may want to connect to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select some updates. WEBCHECK.DLL was part of a service pack.

Thanks Richard,

I look into that. I'm not optimistic though. You see WEBCHECK.DLL is just one of several modules reported when the error occurs. I think that any module that is open when the machine times out will be included in the error.

If I multiple windows open and leave the machine unattended, I sometimes get multiple layered Explorer messages, each reporting a different module.

Thanx,

when J said that webcheck.dll was a part of a service pack, J assume that it will not be downloadable by itself, but maybe Explorer or IE (or another module used by them) will be included as well, and that the whole set may resolve the problem.
Anyhow good luck.

Rossana,

I think I've stumbled upon a fix! My son was having a problem loading a site that had tons of Java servlets so I loaded Internet explorer 5.5. Now his problem is fixed and so is the timeout problem! Thanx - Doug
