So I have just installed advanced server and want to network it with my 98 machines.......when I am at one of the 98s and try to access my shares on the server(which is only set up as a member of a work group/not a domain) it ask me for a password for \\dave\ipc$. I didnt not create any passwords for the admin account

I sent you a PM about this, and NO, you cannot disable this. It is the InterProcess Communications share, and if you disabled it, your system would cease to function properly.
