View Full Version : Internet Connection Lost

Hello,
Firstly having read many threads about this new v.5 release I cannot understand why PC Tools have decided to release a version with so many bugs and issues which brings me to my encountered disaster of loosing the internet connection.
About My Set-Up
=============
I use a wireless modem with my main home PC connected directly to it. I have WinXP pro running with service pack 2 and have McAfee personal suite as protection which is also the only start-up program in the bottom right start-up panel.
What I Have Done
=============
First I uninstalled Spyware Doctor v.4 then re booted my PC. Then using a registry editor removed any left behind items. Then in application data folder ensured any left over files names "Spyware Docotor" were also removed which in this case included a quarantined object (.sdq).
I then installed Spyware Doctor v.5 and rebooted my PC which at this point worked flawlessly without any errors. All protections were enabled and seemed to be OK but upon attempting to retrieve an update Spyware Doctor failed. I then checked my I.E.7 to see if I was connected, I also tried firefox with the same futile resault *No Connection".
My wireless modem however was showing as being connected to the internet with no issues encountered and the usual green OK lights on the modem seemed to be functioning as per usual. MS Outlooked also failed to get a connection when testing, this was most dissapointing considering prior to installing the new v.5 version I updated v.4 OK only a few minutes before the new installation took place. The programe itself all worked fine, scanned ok, accepted any preferential changes I made ok all except this one issue.
Toubleshooting Attempts Made
=======================
I first turned off all protection on Spyware Doctor but still no connection coul dbe established. I then shut-down Spyware Doctor entirely and the programme unloaded itself correctly, this still gave me no connection so lastly I uninstalled the programe altogether and rebooted my PC. My first attempt in attaining access to the internet was immediately successfull.
I re-installed Spysweeper v.5 again now that a connection was established and behold........"NO CONNECTION"! After again uninstalling the programe my connection returned.
As a female user before posting my problem I wanted to ensure that everything was done that could be done to retrieve my Internet connection, though I am sure many girls out there in dispair with this new and futile release perhaps not having enough knowledge to cope with such issues. My advice is to please contact clients with an apology advising them to refrain from updating to v5 until further notice and remove this version from your main download page to avoid any further aggrovation to clients and PC Tools members of staff.
I would appreciate very much from PC Tools techicians any of the following advice:
A. Is there something one can do that I may have omitted in the installation or is this issue already known to PC Tools?
B. Should I revert back to v.4 until this issue has been resolved and if so how will I know that this issue has been resolved in a newer release?
Thanking PC Tools staff for their kind assistance in advance in resolving this issue and that all bugs are soon promtly resolved.
Sarah.

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the info. Regarding the "no internet connection", this is a known issue and the developers are currently working on resolving this.
As a workaround, could you please go to Network Guard-> untick checkbox for 'DNS protection' and see if this restores your internet connection.
If this does not work you can disable Network Guard, Browser Guard and Site Guard.
Also could you confirm which security software you are currently running on your PC?
If you would like to continue using SDv4, you can download this from: http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/version4/

Thank you for your prompt reply, this is appreciated. As I mentioned in the above I completely disabled the on guard protection, in affect no real live protection was enabled which didn't resolve the issue in question. This issue is obviously more in-depth than I am able to comprehend at this point and will revert to the older v4 version you kindly gave me a link for. As far a other security software is concerned this has also been confirmed in the above, McAfee Personal Security Suite.
As a sugguestion since setup.exe file does not contain any information about the issues resolved, it would assist many clients I am sure if on PC Tools home page a notice could be added, advising on the resolved issues otherwise how are we to know when to download the newer improved version? I do not want to be downloading the defekt version and installing it again.
Thank you
Sarah.

Today I lost complete access to the internet. I could not use my browser nor e-mail. The error message said they were unable to connect to a server.
I am running Windows/XP Professional with a router and ADSL connection. I recently installed Spyware Doctor V5.
After a lot of searching I found error messages in:
Computer Management / Event Viewer / System
which indicated a DHCP error with this description:
"Your computer was unable to automatically configure the IP parameters for the Network Card with the network address 00112F62AFD3. The following error occurred during configuration: The Windows Sockets version requested is not supported."
I was only able to fix this because I have access to the internet on another computer. There is a Microsoft tech. note to fix Socket errors at:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm
Read the note carefully, check for winsock2 corruption as described then apply the described repair.
In my case, there were several entries in the winsock network protocol list labeled PCTOOLS...
I have now turned SPYWARE DOCTOR off and don't know how I can have any confidence to turn it back on.
This was a serious error and cost me most of the day to chase down and fix.
I would appreciate an explanation of what is going on and a commitment to tell me when you are going to make significant changes to my configuration like the winsock protocol table.
Thank you

Did PC Tools give you a new license when you bought SD5? If so they may have deactivated your old SD4 license. This is what happened to me. So they told me that they would have to reactivate my old SD4 license.
I got this in an email from their tech.

Hi,
I too suffered a loss of internet connection and network connection after I installed v5. Initially, I thought it was my NIC, so I changed the settings to be a static IP address rather than via DHCP and also had to hardcode the IP address of the DNS server I use. This allowed me access, but wasn't satisfactory. Eventually, I had to boot into Safe Mode, uninstall 5, reinstall v4, reset my connection settings and now all is good with the world once again.
Come on PC Tools, shake your bootie and get this software up to the standard we have come to expect from you guys.

I blindly upgraded thinking a better, faster, more stable product was on the way.
BBBOOOM - I upgraded and the PC started playing silly.. 169 IP address from DHCP... No internet access... The only thing I'd changed was thats right SD5...
It took me lots of tinkering and searching on the net to work out what had gone on... Finally used a restore point to undo the upgrade to 5. (I'm now back at 4)
Thanks a bunch... Surely better testing should have taken place before letting this untamed beast loose on your customers...?
I wonder what the general IT press would think of this?
One very disappointed customer.

I made the mistake of upgrading to 5 on my computer and purchasing it for my wife's computer (could soon be exwife thanks to pctools). After a update 23 Mar her Sony Vaio Laptop with XP completely froze. After three hours we finally managed to get it working well enough to get into some programs. After 4 tries we finally got it to uninstall Spyware Doctor. We are still unable to connect to the internet and many other programs do not operate correctly.
It appears that I through my money away and will now have to completely clean and reinstall her programs or pay someone else to do so. This is worse than any virus attack I have ever seen on a computer. I have not and will not update the program on my computer. I can uninstall and revert to 4 on my computer but since I purchased 5 for hers and never had 4 on it I assume I can not use 4 on hers if we ever get it running correctly.
In this case it does NOT pay to try and protect your computer.

Also upgraded to 5.0 and was not able to connect to the Internet. I disabled Mcafee hoping this would allow me to update, but no luck, still no internet connection! SD 5.0 is definitely flawed. Tech support has been of no help, since I have left them emails for the last 4 days! STAY AWAY FROM 5.0.
Removed 5.0 and re-installed 4.0. SD 4.0 may not have all the bells and whistles that 5.0 has, but it is better than nothing................and nothing is what you get with SD 5.0!
PC COMPUTER ARE YOU LISTENING??

Known issue with no internet connection. If you go back to SDv4, you should be all good again with IE and FF and your internet connection should be restored.

oh, just an FYI, if you uninstall, and still can't get internet, you will want to do a system restore. I believe the problem with sd5 lies in buggy LSP's that it installs in the registry. They redirect or block the access.
You can also do the winsock fix that someone else had suggested. I just found the system restore to be easier.

All,
I am rapidly running out of patience with PCTools. To my knowledge and from reading the "Reported issues log" that was setup by AChen that this business of XP hanging at boot up and losing internet / network connection has still not yet been resolved or indeed received any update.
There in lies another concern of mine, that is, that the vast majority of PCTools replies originate from one person, namely, A Chen. Even when I email PCTools directly, I always get a reply (albeit a swift one) from, yes you've guessed it.......A Chen. Now I ask myself, is he the most dedicated employee the world has ever known or is PCTools a 1 man band outfit ?
Well, I only have a few more days remaining of my trial version and coupled with my desire to migrate from McAfee to Kaspersky and seeing there are compatibility issues between SD5 & Kaspersky Internet Suite, I cannot see me parting with any money and buying SD5.
Thanks for the free trial, but no thanks !
Kind regards,

You do have a good point there. It is a bit disconcerting when only person communicates from the company. I am rapidly leaning back towards Spyware Sweeper.
PCTools can continue to avoid answering how this all happened, but they will only destroy themselves. People like me will no longer sell their product and people will stop buying if they keep this up. If SD (at least prior versions) weren't so effective, I would ditch them now.

Same problem here. Unfortunately, I did not have a good restore point to revert to so I spent the majority of my day yesterday reinstalling Windows. I'm still not 100% where I was before the "upgrade". This is inexcusable. I won't be switching to 5 until I'm 100% positive they've fixed it... and maybe even canceling may subscriptions if it takes too long to resolve. This version was never tested thoroughly before release.

Is there a problem with that? In my opinion he is doing a fanstastic job, I seriously dont know how he answers so many threads in a day. I think the company realises hes keeping everything pretty much under control and the more people replying from the company, the more confusion is bound to happen.
Least hes more personal then the standard templates u get from support! :D

My job is to help everyone on this forum and to keep a track of all the issues/problems found within the forum. I will provide full dedication and attention to all issues in this forum :) There are others from PC Tools such as Support, hdavid, MJohnson and a few others who also provide assistance within the forums. We also have a dedicated Support team and Tech team who will address any issues you may have when you send in a support ticket. For the next few days, there may be a delay with receiving a reply to these tickets as there has been an increase in support tickets.

1. Why isn't it working / what is the problem?
SD 5.0 is working. We are, however, experiencing a number of unforeseen challenges that are expected when breaking into new territory. We have extensively tested this product and we have even delayed its launch for several months. Even with that, we have had some surprises that we are currently fixing. We are going to make immediate improvements to the product and simultaneously let our customers know how to best utilize the stronger elements of the new Spyware Doctor as further improvements are made. As you know, we are using a new platform that further improves the malware search and destroy elements cherished in the earlier versions of Spyware Doctor.
2. Why did it go to the market when it wasn't ready?
SD 5.0 was extensively tested. Just as Microsoft’s VISTA is experiencing growing pains, we are facing several challenges that did not appear in our earlier extensive testing program. We are adjusting the product to immediately respond to these issues.
3. Why didn't we test it more thoroughly?
It is not possible—given the extensive range of technological changes to the product—to respond to every bug or challenge despite our extensive testing phase. We thought we had caught the major challenges and were ready for a smooth launch. Our experienced development team has already begun resolving the major issues.
We greatly apologize for any inconvenience and are working to resolving all the issues found with SD.

Aloha Anthony,
Glad you are working on things. The only way I can get my browser ( Mozilla ) working with any kind of funtionality at all is to disable the Network, Browser and Site Guards...otherwise it's like trying to swim in molasses!
A full scan took over 48 minutes; with alternative data streams and rootkit unchecked, it still took 23 minutes; I don't recall V. 4 taking that long..
The Staus Screen of my version ( 5.0.0.172 ) says there is a new version available, but when I click on the link, Smart Update says I'm up to date! ???
Have you released an update with some fixes?
Thanks for your response,

Or as it's on the list of known issues, that a fix will be provided ?

I had my son install build 174 last night, and it wasn't long before he came out complaining about the internet being down (and it wasn't), so I went in and checked his machine and couldn't get it back working, so I uninstalled SD, and after I rebooted it, still wouldn't work. Then I tried "netsh winsock reset" and rebooted the machine w/no success. After it came backup, I noticed that there was no DNS servers listed (ipconfig /all). Put the DNS back in and it worked, so tonight, I'll have him re-install it and keep an eye on it...

Hi Everyone,
DRDRJAY - the issues you are having should now be resolved in 5.0.0.174. To upgrade, please exit SD and uninstall 5.0.0.172. Download 5.0.0.174 from http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/upgrade/. For more info on this version you can visit: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46290.
Perplexed - The internet connection issue has now been resolved in 5.0.0.174, so you do not need to send in a support ticket for this issue. Please note, you have the option to send in a ticket or post on this forum. Either way, your issues will be addressed. :)
luftx - Let us know how you go with this. It should be resolved with the latest version.
AChen,
I'm sorry but your explanation is simply not acceptable. To begin with even trying to compare a virus scanner against that of a far more complex OS is that of stupidity. On top of that, Vista was produced by Microsoft who are generally expected to write buggy code, and yet somehow yours is even worse.
3. Why didn't we test it more thoroughly?
"It is not possible—given the extensive range of technological changes to the product"
Yet again this barely covers it. You released a program that causes more problems than it was supposed to solve. For me personally my family had a whole host of virus/spyware problems while I’ve been at uni resulting in the OS having to be reinstalled. I come home on Monday for Easter, and find yet again they have more problems, but this time caused by that which was protecting them (I blamed my little brother oops).
These are also hardly teething troubles; losing the ability to access the internet can be of vital importance to many people. In fact the only reason I was able to fix it was because I had a laptop handy that I could Google with, I’m sure many do not have this luxury.
If you had at least come out and said, look sorry we released this far too early it's entirely our fault and we shouldn't have done it; I would have been far more impressed. Instead you said you experienced "a number of unforeseen challenges that are expected when breaking into new territory".
At least accept some responsibility for the complete mess you have made.
I personally will make sure that my family gets rid of it, and never buy from you again.
Ta to theregister for helping me locate the problem.

Yes Gambit,
5.0.0.174 may be problem solved, yet tell me how you update to that version if one has no internet, and has no knowledge of how to fix it. I guarantee a lot of people with this problem still have not fixed it and will probably end up doing something a lot more drastic to find a way.

Aloha Anthony,
Thanks for your response and the 5....174 upgrade; however, it too causes problems for me. Had to install the upgrade twice...scan worked fine. When I tried the internet, Mozilla froze with just a border then finally came up and froze again; my mouse froze; couldn't exit the program or turn off Spyware Dr.; finally got it to shut down.
I'm sure you're trying and beseiged by complaints, a lot of which I've read. I travel a lot, both Nationally and Internationaly and....I really don't have time for this to interrupt my business. I'll be reinstalling version 4 until this storm subsides at some future date.
Thanks,

Hi Jba,
If you have lost your internet connection even after uninstalling SDv5, please see below for a fix.
How to reinstall TCP/IP in Windows 2000 (may need the Windows 2000 CD)
You might have to reinstall TCP/IP to help resolve some issues, such as improperly configured bindings, dialup clients that are unable to connect to the RAS server, NIC drivers that do not properly bind to the TCP/IP protocol, etc.
To remove TCP/IP in Windows 2000:
1. Click to clear the TCP/IP check box from all dialup and LAN connections in "Network and Dialup Connections".
2. Install another protocol (NetBEUI or NWlink) to maintain a placeholder for each conneciton.
3. Restart your computer
4. Reinstall TCP/IP, and restart your computer again.
How to reinstall TCP/IP in Windows XP (applies both to the Home and Pro editions of XP)
In Windows XP, the uninstall button is disabled for the TCP/IP protocol. The TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system, and it is not possible to uninstall it. Still, in some extreme cases, the most appropriate solution is to reset the TCP/IP stack back to a default state...
There is a NetShell (netsh) command-line scripting utility for the configuring and monitoring of Windows XP networking. Using this tool, a reset command is available that rewrites pertinent TCP/IP registry keys to achieve the same result as the removal and the reinstallation of the protocol. The following registry branches are reset using this tool:
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters \
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters\
Comand usage
Simply type the following in Command Prompt:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
"c:\resetlog.txt" being the logfile generated by netsh to store changes being made. If the file exists, the new log will be appended to the end of the existing file.

Good day everyone,
I used to use Spyware Doctor on my old machine (before my brother broke the screen) and it used to work just fine! A few months ago I bought a new laptop which runs Vista and installed Spyware Doctor. It works just fine! HOWEVER, I also installed it on to my girlfriends laptop (XP) (probably a soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend because of this!) and BAAAM - NO INTERNET! I then uninstalled the Spyware Doctor and the connection reappread, albeit not for long. I've tried everything again from uninstalling the program to running system restore. No luck! There is network connection, however we are not able to actually go on the internet! Mozilla doesn't work, IE doesn't work, even MSN Messenger doesn't work! I do not know what to do . . . please, please help me!
Also, she is able to connect to the internet via other networks, but not her own!
1. If I were to install the latest version of the Spyware Doctor . . . would it help?
2. What is this I am hearing about the "TCP/IP?" What is that?
3. How should I resolve the problem?

Hi
I would not suggest using the fix listed above as it may not work in Windows Vista. When you installed (or uninstalled) Spyware Doctor on the Vista machine, did you use Run as Administrator?
If you didn't I would advise the following:
Download the latest version of Spyware Doctor from here (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/)
Save it to your Desktop
Right-click the file sdsetup.exe and select Run as Administrator.
Vista User Account Control should then prompt you for an administrator password.
Complete the installation process.
Restart the PC
Using the Windows Vista Control Panel, use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Spyware Doctor
Restart the PC
Delete the Spyware Doctor folder (usually located in the Program Files folder)Hopefully that will solve your problem

Hi
My apologies, didn't read that properly!:o
Do try the following:
Hope that helps

One more question . . . would it make a difference if I were to fix her computer here, and not at her place? Or do I have to do this while connected to her network?

Are you using the same license code on your girlfriends PC as you have used on your PC? If so, then you are breaking the license agreement. However, PC tools arent smart enough to restrict a license to one PC so it really doesnt matter anyway.
I would suggest trying the latest version, I mean its evidently clear that the version install at the moment is the source of problems. Try a new version if it doesnt work there are a plethora of better programs out there, dont waste your time being stuck on one.

I don't think the location of the fix should make any difference.

No, it's not the same license code, it's not even the same version of Spyware Doctor (if that makes a difference. I mean, I don't know if the same code would be valid for various versions of the same product).
Alright, thanks man . . . as soon as I get her internet up and running, I am sure that I will look for other products! I doubt that she'd want me to mess around with her laptop again! She was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally pissed when the pc crashed and lost internet!

Hi Jba,
If you have lost your internet connection even after uninstalling SDv5, please see below for a fix.

For Windows XP:
1. Go to Start Menu > Run > Type in: cmd > OK
2. The command prompt window will open, type in: netsh winsock reset
Updated my wife's Toshbia-Qomos with SD 5.5, with AV option. It operates on a wireless LAN it started lossing connection and slowed down or stopped all together.
Also running McAfee Win XP Media sp2. I uninstalled SD5.5 everything is working OK now.
Not sure if I can trust this product again.

Since you already have McAfee, we advise users to only run one AV at a time to avoid any potential conflicts. We think that this problem could be related to the AV plugin conflicting with McAfee. Could you please send me your license code and I'll temporarily disable this so you can install the SD standalone and see whether there is a conflict and I can pass the info to the developers to investigate further. This could also be related to the problem with IE in the other thread.

Hi, im sorry but i cant sit here and read a years worth of posts. But for past couple of months now, every morning i wake up my internet connection has died. A diagnostic on the Explorer error page tells me that its something to do with a Winsock error. I dont know what this means. All I know is that this only started after i set up Spyware Doctor instead of Norton. My ISP has said there is no problem with my connection, I only noticed this topic because i was on the forums for another issue.
If someone, who has been reading this thread, could be kind enough to tell me if this is the same problem as people have been experiencing, and posting about here, and what the solution is, i would be really gratefull. I have read about 10 posts so far, but i cant afford to sit and read another 40+, especially as i dont understand a word of it :p

Ronin:
If You have had Norton on Your comp, do NOT forget to run their un-installer tool to clean up all the mess BEFOR installing any other security app!
Just Google: 'Norton uninstaller' and You get all the needed info.
I've found this thread interesting. I've been puzzling over whether or not the connectivity issue is somehow related to the update problem, about which I posted in another thread.
A couple of weeks ago I installed a second SDwAV (purchased edition) on a Dell Inspiron 6000. Win XP Pro+SP2+updates. I had uninstalled NAV 2007 with my ususal Win remove, reboot, run NAV uninstall tool, reboot, delete all of the apps folders, run ccleaner, reboot.
I then installed SD .332 version for the first time on the Dell. This HP desktop computer that I'm posting from is still running .212 and it uses hardwired ethernet to our router. The Dell uses wireless (Intel Pro/Wireless 2915abg). Somewhere around the time that I installed .322 on the Dell I began to have connectivity problems with it. About 80% of the time that it was started it would connect to the router, 20% it would not. Now here's the interesting part. This computer, like all of ours, has an admin acct and 3 limited user accts. 80% connectivity on the _first_ acct that was logged into. Zero/zip/nada -- no connectivity -- on the second acct that was logged into. It does this 100% consistently. We typically log into user accts to do work and only use the admin acct when necessary.
When I posted about update problems on that computer I was referring to when the connectivity _is_ working. If it doesn't work I just reboot it until it does work, and then use only one acct. No updates for four days now. When I run it manually it says that it doesn't need it. When it runs automatically it gets an error.
That computer has Comodo Pro Firewall. I believe that I have it set to allow SD to access the internet. It also has AdAware 2008 (free version, nothing running realtime) which I only run manually. No other av or spyware tools.
How about it, PCT?

Try the following:
1. Uninstall SD (start-> Programs-> Spyware Doctor-> Uninstall Spyware Doctor
2. Go to c:\Program Files\Spyware doctor and make sure this folder does not exist.
3. Go to Start Menu-> Run-> Type in: cmd-> OK
4. The command prompt window will open, type in: netsh winsock reset
5. Reboot

Ohso.
Have You tried to hard-wire the Dell?
Reason I ask is I'm haveing quite some problems getting it to play wireless.
Installed a Barracuda 'N' router.
Connected a D-Link Air G+ 520, and connection came and went. All of a sudden I even got arroe messages at shut-down. Been on e-mail with D-Link in Singapore, un-installed, changed drivers etc. Finally got the message : Defective adapter, change.
Got a new D-Link Air+ 510. Connection stable, but new error messages at boot-up. New correspondance with Singapore: The driver does not work with SP3!!!! New driver, still same problem with error messages.
However one funny thing:
At every D-link install it flags: Installing PC Tools Driver?
Beats me what is going on, but on hard wire no problems!

A PS:
My laptop running a SMC 'N' stick has no problems, but I have had to disable 802,1x coding on both comps.
> Have You tried to hard-wire the Dell?

No. We use that Dell in wireless mode. I expect that it will work hardwired, but that is not how we need to use it.
Besides, we have another Dell laptop, not running SD, that uses wireless with the same router, and it has no problem connecting. So it's unlikely to be a router problem.
The connectivity problem is only with the Dell that uses wireless _and_ runs SDwAV. When I saw posts about connectivity problems, it reminded me how that computer started having a problem _around_ the time I installed SD. I'm not saying that it's a SD problem, but when I saw this thread it made me suspicious.

Hi thanks for replying. Can you explain part 4 a bit better? I have done everything, but when i was typing in netsh winsock and then reset, it just kept coming up that reset was an unrecognised/invalid command. After i type in netsh winsock and then press enter what to i then type?

Type in the whole command: netsh winsock reset then hit enter :)
