View Full Version : Possible source of the V5 problems?

So, out of frustration with not having any usable antispyware installed for a while now - since the betas were unusable, and the formal release has been unusable, due to horrible lockups of internet connectivity, i decided to try installing SD5 in safe mode. who knows, maybe it'll work, right? well, it installed fine, but after rebooting into normal mode, exact same problem as before: i open my browser (maxthon), it opens all its saved tabs (48 at the moment), and then just hangs. permanent 'hourglass of death' spinning whenever i hover the mouse over the browser. eventually - say five minutes later - i just hit the close button, because it's clearly not going anywhere.

so i went into SD's settings, and turned off the following OnGuard protections:

Browser Guard
Network Guard
Site Guard

and opened up my browser again. voila! tabs open, and they're all responsive. of course, fat lot of good having antispyware software installed that's with the majority of the useful spyware functions turned off when browsing.

but the kicker is this: during the first browser startup, i opened my local area network connection status, and watched the activity section. the flow of packets was almost non-existent, even though 48 tabs were being opened simultaneously. after stopping the onguard protections above, the flow of packets was 'huge' - what you'd expect with 48 streams of TCP/IP activity occurring simultaneously.

this makes me suspect that the bug in SD5 is that it's serializing network traffic as it scans it, and choking on the data. i'm not a network guru, i'm a Unix server guru, but the behaviour sure looks like SD5 is trying to inspect the packets, but forcing them all single file through it, rather than using multiple threads, and that's why it dies. the rate of flow of inbound packets tends to suggest that.

but again, i'm a server dweeb not a networking dweeb.

but once again, i'm going to have to uninstall SD5, since it's pointless to run it if i have to disable it from inspecting my browser traffic for spyware, which is why i run it in the first place.

can we get a status on when there might be a spyware doctor version 5, 'service pack' 1? this is really beginning to wear thin. this is definitely the last time i'm going to be a 'sport' and go through the hassle of an install/uninstall to see if there's something on my end that can get SD5 working properly. it's NOT on my end. SD4 NEVER had these problems, ever. when an upgrade causes one's machine to go "kerbluey", that means the upgrade is fubar, not my machine. please fix this. i was patient when the beta was going, but not any more. SD5 should not have been promoted to release status. period. it is not release software. it is still a beta, just with a different name. and that's an affront to those who *did* participate in the beta, giving you feedback in good faith.

Hi Paul,

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide us with this extensive feedback.

I have passed this on to the developers and will investigate this further. Once I have more information on when a fix is released for SDv5, I will let you know.

thanks Anthony. i will say you've shown great patience during all the complaints, which is to your credit. i've had less than stellar experiences with some representatives on their own forums, where the standards of customer service ethics have fallen by the wayside. i spent some time in customer support many years ago myself, it's an incredibly difficult job, and one that requires you to remain pleasant and agreeable even with hot flames in your face.

again, thanks.
