View Full Version : SD5.0 utterly dysfunctional ... dead as a DODO!

I just installed SD5.0 (without anti-virus -- kindly remove that superfluous feature, dear developers, we just want a FULLY FUNCTIONAL pure anti-spyware product, like the name suggests). What a frustrating experience it's been; I can't seem to get it working properly. For example: I'm getting very unusual system errors (at one point, I got a message saying it had been 'locked' by the system ... now that's a new one for me and, boy, have I had some inexplicable error messages in my time with M$ [megabucks] XP Home!); sometimes I cannot run scans or access SD5.0 at all from the tray icon (right clicking has zero effect!); scans hang before completion; internet browsing slows to snail's pace.

I went through days of hair-tearing, tooth-grinding hassle with that awful SD4.0 clash with ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.0, not to mention SD4.0's appallingly slow load times and gargantuan CPU usage. Now I thought all the problems would be solved. How naive of me! SD5.0 should be added to the endangered species list. It has extinction in its genes. No self-respecting PC user should install it. PC Tools should issue an immediate apology to all registered users: obviously, the beta-testing phase was ended prematurely.

Im also experiencing the similar problems... however, I have disabled Browser Guard, Network Guard and Site Guard and the problems seem to disappear. If this doesnt work for you, continue with SDv4 for the time being. I have faith in PC Tools in resolving this.

Cheers,
Chippa

I also got lots of lock file problem. My PC almost turns dead and my only solution was to take SD5 out and reinstall SD4 again. :o

As previous posters have said (here and in other threads) SD5 is still BETA, they should never have released it as Live.

file locks are only one of the many issues, i've seen it much up a system restore point because it thinks one of the files is spyware.

In order to get SD5 working, you have to practically disable all the "guard" programs. Thus rendering it useless

SD4 (although slow) is a safer choice.

I was waiting til SWD was out of beta and when I got the message I thought it would be that way. I installed the update and from that all hell broke loose. The explorer would hang, error messages on end. I had to start cmd and manually run uninstall. With V4 the only issue was speed and this dumb splash screen which overcast other windows and oh, the huge updates every other day.  :(
This is certainly a sure way to wreck one's reputation.

I so totally agree with the effects as described by you. From a reputable, recommended and trustworthy product down to a 'thingi' whose mission is to trash you system...all that in 1 upgrade!! And who is PC tools kidding by including anti-virus?? After what my first installation attempt of SD 5 did to my system, do I really dare to throw an anti-virus app into the mix?? no way Jose'.

Frustration apart...PC tools needs do something about this. Up to now, SD was a really useful and trusted tool, recommended by many and purchased by more. Ever since VISTA loomed on the horizon, marketing guys, software developer went into overdrive to find the next killer thing...alas, this version (SD 5) completely and utterly missed the mark. It is buggy, seriously thrashes the system and leaves just the sort of taste in your mouth which spy-sweeper could and would gladly wash down..;-)
