View Full Version : Another Smart Update problem

I've had an ongoing problem trying to download Smart Updates for both Software Doctor version 4 & 5.

In fact, on the computer in question, I can't even access the pctools.com website.

I don't have any other anti virus software running and the Windows Firewall allows Software Doctor.

Is there another site where I can download the updates? It's been 175 days since I've been able to download an update.

TIA

Wow 175 days without updates.

If you were unable to access the internet, how did you download SDv4 and SDv5? Or get to this forum?

Are you able to access other websites? If you are unable to get the updates and you dont have any AV or Firewalls running, something is definitely blocking your access.

I seen a post a while back regarding this. I'll try to find it now and will get back to you.

Cheers,
Chippa

Start the computer with no programs running.

To clean boot Windows XP with a Selective Startup
- Click on Start Menu > Run > Type: msconfig > OK
- The The System Configuration Utility appears
- Click on General Tab > Under Selective Startup, make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked. (You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).
- Clearing all the boxes (except Load System Services) provides for a basic clean boot. For a complete clean boot

- Click the Services tab.
- Check Hide All Microsoft Services (You must hide the Microsoft Services before continuing)
- Uncheck all Services which are displayed in the list except for the two Spyware Doctor services
- Click Apply and then OK.
- Click Restart

Once your computer reboots, run Spyware Doctor and try to Smart Update

To restore your computer to its original settings

1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears.
3. Click Normal Startup.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Restart.

Fair enough my friend. But we can't possibly be doing this procedure every time we need to update! PC Tools should know this...

Yo ho Wolfmandim ..thank you for your suggestion with the msconfig. It didn't work with this happy laptop whatsoever. The smart update still came in without a pass mark.

Support ... your suggestion as to downloading the latest version / update, this doesn't work either.

This problem was present in the Beta version and still obviously hasn't been fixed. Previously I had to uninstall the Beta and reinstall version 4, which worked flawlessly. For some weird and wonderful reason, the happy-go-lucky techs aren't fix'en this problem.

And no ... it isn't Symantec products that's interrupting the Spyware Dr from doing his duty ... there's some hobgoblin to be found within the new(er) version of this Spyware Dr.

If there's some other suggestion, I'm going to be sittin' right here in front of this computer waiting for a reply. If no one answers, I'll know it's you! :-}

(Thought for today ... if we weren't here, we'd in all likelihood be somewhere else)
