Several users had complained that they can not connect to the Internet. For some we have noticed that they had Logs that blocked packet of Ethernet type 0x8863 which is PPP Over Ethernet (Discovery Stage) or 0x8864 which is PPP Over Ethernet (PPP Session Stage). Adding these rules would solve the problems
1. Download the attached file PPPOE.rls
2. Go to 'Advanced Rules' and choose the Internet Zone adapter
3. Press 'Rules set'->Import
4. Choose the PPPOE.rls file
5. Press on Apply

The protocol will be enabled and this will hopefully solve the problem
If you still can not gain access to the Internet please look at the Logs and send us the logs that blocks your access (We still can not reproduce the problem because this is happening only on specific modems)

Well I tried this, but alas it didn't make any difference...

I have 2 computers connected to a hub which is in turn connected to my router, after installing this firewall, I lose all access to the Internet, and all access to my other computer.
I inserted the PPPOE.rls file as instructed, but it didn't make any difference at all..

Now according to Vista itself when I go "diagnose and repair" I get the message:

The network adapter "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues"

So, I go look in "settings/Adapter" in firewall plus, and there is no sign of my Networking adapter in there at all.. (there is only 2 PCtools drivers in there)

I disable the firewall and then exit it, but I still not get any internet or ability to see other computer..

I completely uninstall the firewall, reboot my computer, Internet works, and I can see my other computer again.

To my untrained brain, it looks like pctools drivers are stopping my nforce drivers from working, although I am probably wrong.

I import the rules, unfortunately,I still can't connect to the Internet……
Firewall still blocked packet of Ethernet type 0x8863 ,0x8864 as if the rules can't take effect

If you can't connect to the internet. You might want to check if your computer can connect to itself.

open a command prompt and
ping localhost

if your computer can't ping itself, your networking is completely down. And you will not be able to connect to the internet.

Could someone post a screen capture of the log of the blocked packet.

Go to PCTools Firewall -> Logs -> right click the blocked log entry-> select details -> hold the ALT key down and press print screen -> open paint -> Paste(CTRL-V) -> save as a jpg(NOT BMP) -> and attach to your post

Ok try this:

In your rule
1. Select an "ethernet type" of other
2. Check "where local ethernet address is" and input the modems MAC
3. Where direction is inbound
4. Allow and stop processing more modules
5. Select logging also so we can see the results
6. Place this rule next to last

This approach is similiar to my tries with getting Ximeta's netdisk to work,
for reference I will post this thread.
http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45719

This post, as stated is used for a Ximeta Netdisk but the principle stays the same just substitute your PPOE unit in place of the Netdisk.

Please post more screen caps so we may see the outcome.

Can you post your exact rule, and the error directly related to that rule.

If I am understanding correctly then you have a dial-up PPPOe connection and it is being blocked even though there is a rule to allow it?

Also since we know that PCT FW is based on LnS this thread may help out.
From the official LnS forum at Wilders:
Configuring Look'n'Stop with Routers (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=9474)

----EDIT-----
Have you made a rule like this? Seems the fix requires inbound and outbound rules
Outbound Rule
Ethernet Type- Other
Where Local Ethernet address - Is your MAC
Where remote Ethernet is - FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
Where direction is - Outbound

Inbound rule
Ethernet Type- Other
Where Local Ethernet address - Is your Modem's MAC
Where remote Ethernet is - Is your network adapter's MAC
Where direction is - Inbound

//EDIT-2//
Ok from trying to read through a french thread on PPPOE (ADSL) problem it seems that there might be an issue with fragmented packets(malformed packets), since PCTFW doesn't support this you may need to wait for a software fix.
Below are the specific lines from the LnS rules to allow PPPOE connection.

IPFragmentOffset=2
IPFragmentFlags=8

Would you please perform several operation that will help us to diagnose why your network card doesn't bind:

Under MS Windows XP:
1. Unpack PCTFW.ZIP (password encrypted)
2. Download DbgView from http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugView.zip and unpack it.
3. Install PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0 but don't reboot OS.
4. Replace file: \windows\system32\drivers\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS.
5. Replace file: \Program files\PC Tools Firewall Plus\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS.
6. Run DbgView.exe and click "Capture"\"Log Boot".
7. Reboot OS.
8. Run DbgView.exe
9. Push right mouse button on "My Network Place" icon and click "Properties" in Popup menu.
10. Push right mouse button on "Local Area Connection" icon in the Network connections window and click "Disable" in Popup menu.
11. Push right mouse button on "Local Area Connection" icon in the Network connections window and click "Enable" in Popup menu.
12. Click "file"\"save" in DbgView window and save file with name "PCTFW.LOG".
13. Pack PCTFW.LOG into PCTFW_LOG.ZIP with password encryption (using the same password as in PCTFW.ZIP)
14. Publish file PCTFW_LOG.ZIP on the forum

Or under MS Windows Vista:
1. Unpack PCTFW.ZIP (password encrypted)
2. Download DbgView from http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugView.zip and unpack it.
3. Install PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0 but don't reboot OS.
4. Replace file: \windows\system32\drivers\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS (using Windows Explorer).
5. Replace file: \Program files\PC Tools Firewall Plus\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS (using Windows Explorer).
6. Push right mouse button on DbgView.exe icon and click "Run As Administrator". Than click "Capture"\"Log Boot".
7. Reboot OS.
8. Push right mouse button on DbgView.exe icon and click "Run As Administrator"
9. Click "Start" button and than push right mouse button on "Network" icon and click "Properties" in Popup menu.
10. Click "Tasks:manage network connections" button in the Network and Sharing Center Window.
11. Push right mouse button on "Local Area Connection" icon in the Network connections window and click "Disable" in Popup menu.
12. Push right mouse button on "Local Area Connection" icon in the Network connections window and click "Enable" in Popup menu.
13. Click "file"\"save" in DbgView window and save file with name "PCTFW.LOG".
14. Pack PCTFW.LOG into PCTFW_LOG.ZIP with password encryption (use the same password as in PCTFW.ZIP).
15. Publish file PCTFW_LOG.ZIP on the forum.

NOTE: I've sent the password for unpacking PCTFW.ZIP in the private message.

Thank you for your helping.

yes, I have a dial-up PPPOe connection ,my network card MAC is 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE,so I add a rule to allow Local Ethernet address 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE, I don't know what is Modem's MAC or network adapter's MAC::eek: How can I got it?

Ok so your Network cards MAC is 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE, by theory of deduction the MAC of the Modem should be 00:90:1A:01:05:60 as per your screen capture posted earlier.

So lets try this:

Outbound Rule
Ethernet Type- Other
Where Local Ethernet address - 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE
Where remote Ethernet is - FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
Where direction is - Outbound

Inbound rule
Ethernet Type- Other
Where Local Ethernet address - 00:90:1A:01:05:60
Where remote Ethernet is - 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE
Where direction is - Inbound

Remember to enable logging in each rule so we can tell if it is working. Also make sure you place them right above the "All other packets rule"
Clear your entries in the log and then take a fresh screen cap, naming the rules in english or numerically would help as I cannot read chinese ;)

As I said though this is a known issue with LnS that I assume carries over to PCT so we may just have to wait for a fix.

Now for the outbound rule.
Lets try switching the MAC addresses around in the outbound rule.

Outbound Rule
Ethernet Type- Other
Where Local Ethernet address - FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
Where remote Ethernet is - 00-E0-4D-90-34-BE
Where direction is - Outbound
Enable logging - Yes

And if that doesn't work as usual post it up.

Enclosed is the file you requested, all packaged up and encrypted..

I actually did it twice, because the first time I never did the "run as admin" (I'm soo used to not doing it since I disabled the UAC) - the file I sent you is the second time.

I did also notice that after doing the steps in Vista you requested, my Internet and Network came online :) - although when I booted a second time I had to still go and disable/enable to get it online again..

PS: I did make one mistake, My router runs PPoA not PPoE.

I still have no idea why IP would fix it though, from the logs it doesn't seem to be a IP type.. ???

Could you post the rule for others to look at, simply typing it in should suffice.

Thanks for a great work.

However, I couldn't find any problem with network card binding.

In this case, would you please answer:
1. Did the NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller exist in the PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0/Settings/Adapters/Adapters list when you were doing the test (before you clicked "Disable")?
2. Did you have network connection to other host when you were doing the test (before you clicked "Disable")?
3. Doesn't your network connection work after you've disabled filtration in the PC Tools Firewall Plus?

I am trying to find out why your network connection is blocked.
I've attached another version of PCTFW.SYS (encrypted with the same password).
And would you please help us again:
Under MS Windows Vista:
1. Unpack new version of PCTFW.ZIP (password encrypted.)
2. Replace file: \windows\system32\drivers\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS (using Windows Explorer).
3. Replace file: \Program files\PC Tools Firewall Plus\pctfw.sys by new version of file PCTFW.SYS (using Windows Explorer).
4. Push right mouse button on DbgView.exe icon and click "Run As Administrator". Than click "Capture"\"Log Boot".
5. Reboot OS.
6. Run Internet Explorer and try connecting to the Internet
7. Click "file"\"save" in DbgView window and save file with name "PCTFW.LOG".
8. Pack PCTFW.LOG into PCTFW_LOG.ZIP with password encryption (use the same password as in PCTFW.ZIP).
9. Publish file PCTFW_LOG.ZIP on the forum.

Thanks

Ok since one of the bugs being fixed was the ignoring of custom packets

2. Fix a BUG that caused the FWLIB to ignore an Advanced Rule with custom Ethernet Type.

Why don't you go back and try writing the custom packet rule for "custom-type 8863" again and post the results ;)

1. Did the NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller exist in the PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0/Settings/Adapters/Adapters list when you were doing the test (before you clicked "Disable")?

Nope, the only things that were in there were the 2 PCTools Drivers

2. Did you have network connection to other host when you were doing the test (before you clicked "Disable")?

Nope, no kind of connection from my main computer at all..

3. Doesn't your network connection work after you've disabled filtration in the PC Tools Firewall Plus?

Nope, no kind of networking at all..
(Note: I also completly killed the firewall (by ending task) - but Internet and networking still did NOT appear..)

Does it mean that you have Ethernet Network Card directly connected to ADSL router?

Ummm nope...
Main computer network card is connected to a gigabit ethernet switch.
Little computer network card is connected to the same gigabit ethernet switch.
Cable from Router is connected to the same gigabit ethernet switch.

I have the firewall installed on little computer (Also Vista) and have no problems at all (apart from not being able to figure out the packet rules thingie (just turned that off for now))

My main computer is a triple boot (Kubuntu (Linux), XP Pro and Vista Ultimate) - what I may do a little later is goto the XP boot and install the firewall on there, that should tell us if it is a vista problem or not.. (maybe)

UPDATE: I installed the firewall on my XP Pro Boot on the main machine, and it worked perfectly the first time, so to my untrained brain, that tells me it has to be something in Vista, as Vista and XP are on the same machine.

Just a thought, but you don't by chance rely on anything in Windows Defender etc do you? as I do not have that installed, my Ultimate install is one which I have made up myself using the tool called "Vlite" (It allows you to customise your vista to what you want installed etc..)

Thanks. It's a perfect work. And thank you for update.

I've found the problem: Vista successfully binds your network card but later Vista tries to rebind it. However, Network card has been rebound incorrectly.
Would you please answer:
1. Have you installed any network applications like: firewalls (except PC Tools Firewall Plus), network packet monitors, sniffers or etc.?

If you have please uninstall, reboot OS and try to connect again.

2. Is your connection alive after you click "disable/enable" on the "Local Area Connection"?

Would you please make a screenshot of the "Local Area Connection Properties" window.

And would you please try another one version of PCTFW.SYS.
Just do the same operations as I've described in second post.
NOTE: PC Tools Firewall Plus should be running.

Thanks.

I had the same problem with running this firewall. However, it is now running ok without any connection or other problems. I had installed the software and Vista did not want to install the software drivers. But I allowed the installation of the drivers and completed the software installation but I was not able to connect to the Internet. I had uninstalled the software and then reinstalled the software but was not asked by Vista about the drivers and the installation was completed but everything is working fine. I now have a firewall installed and working on my Vista computer. I dont know if this is going to work for all trying to use this firewall software.

I can answer the uninstall question without doing that again...
As soon as I uninstall PCTpp;s firewall I get internet and local networking back again, there is no need to disable/enable at all (I did this a day or so ago, so know what happens.)
Yes, I was using a program called Vista Firewall Control ( http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html ) which was a pretty basic one, but then I found PCTools. And yes, I uninstalled it properly before I installed PCTools one :)

I can't make a screenshot or do the test at the moment tho but will take the screenshot and do the test as soon as I am able.

3. Press 'Rules set'->Import

If it does not work, have a look at the logs and send the logs that block your access, so we can have a look at it.

PCTools FirewallPlus is working just fine for me. (Vista) No problem with rules, etc... I have removed and installed Spyware Doctor 5.0 several times now and when installed, no internet. When removed the internet is just fine. Now to figure out SD 5.0's problem......

Wish I still had a copy of 4.0.................

Hi!

I'm using PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0.0.14 with Windows Vista. Unfortunately, I'm only able to use Internet Explorer and other Internet applications, when I deactivate the blocking rules "TCP/UDP: all other packets" (I translated this from my German version) and "All other packets".

I assume that now my firewall is not save any more. So what can I do to go in the internet without deactivating this rules?

Thanks,

Marco

Here a picture of the blockes activities when I try to use the Internet Explorer without deacitivating the two rules mentioned above:

Could you post a smaller capture of your rules specifically the ones mentioned, they "should" be in the last 4-5 rules.

Hi!

I have now reinstalled the firewall (in English, so that you understand the screenshots), the problem is still the same. Here are two screenshots. The rule which seems to be the cause is always in the last row of the two screenshots:

Hello, could you post a screen shot of the logs showing:
1.) The list window of blocked packets
2.) A capture of the "Packet Contents" window for each rule blocking access
--double click the log in the logs window, just incase you didn't already know :)

This should be able to shed some more light on this situation.

Hi,

you can see a screenshot of the list window of blocked packets in my post from yesterday, 6:50 p.m. (see above).

And here are the screenshots of 2 "Packet Contents" windows:

First check to see if you have a DNS rule in your ruleset, I didn't see one in the screenshot.

If not lets create one:
Where ethernet type is IPv4 or IPv6
Protocol is UDP
Remote Port is 53
Allow - Log - Stop processing more modules

Logging is enabled to see if the packets are being allowed.

Place this rule after "Allow File and Print sharing"
And lets see what that does.

DNS being blocked is a major reason why you cannot connect to any websites.

As you've told me, I created a new rule, but Internet Explorer and other Internet applications are still not working. The name of the new rule is "PC Tools Support Rule". Here is a new screenshot:

Ok, that was a step in the right direction.

As a work around for NOW do the same as you did before this time make it

IPv4 or IPv6
TCP
Port 80
Where Ip is equal to me
Allow - NO logging(too many entries in the logs) - stop processing

And do the same for 110

80 is http and 110 is your email client, that should fix it for now.
Remember not to define inbound/outbound for the rules unless you plan on making another to compliment it.

It doesn't seem to be that you are behind any sort of router from the logs, is this correct?

I don't understand why this is happening maybe when someone from support shows up they will be able to direct you better.

//EDIT//
You may also want to add port 443 also ->
The easiest way is to see if you can correlate the events with known programs from your logs.
80 and 110 were easy but some other programs may not be so easy.

I wish there was a way to export log files <--- Hint, Hint Developers... :)

Hi!

After installing PCTool firewall Plus, I couldn't connetc to internet. I completed the following procedure;

1. Download the attached file PPPOE.rls
2. Go to 'Advanced Rules' and choose the Internet Zone adapter
3. Press 'Rules set'->Import
4. Choose the PPPOE.rls file
5. Press on Apply

and I still cant connect to the web, unless I disactivate the software. What else can I do?
Thanks

Opppps...

I just trashed Vista, I was playing around in the registry and it crashed the computer, and the backup won't go in..

So am having to reinstall Vista again, will report back when it's reinstalled as to wether or not I still have the problem..

We've fixed some problems in the driver. I hope this also fixed this issue.
Would you please verify the issue, if you already reinstall Vista:

1. Unpack the attached file
2. Shut down PC Tools Firewall Plus
3. Delete file "...\Program Files\PCTools Firewall Plus\pctfw.sys"
4. Copy the unpacked file pctfw.sys to "...\Program Files\PCTools Firewall Plus\pctfw.sys"
5. Launch PC Tools Firewall Plus
6. Reboot the computer

Thanks

I Can confirm that I now have connection to the internet using Vista Ultimate 32-bit..
From the time the firewall icon appears until the Connection happens is between 40 and 50 seconds, but hey it works.. :) :)

Now all I got to do is get my computers talking to each other without going through a whole pile of making up rules to allow them.. - I noticed a thread about this, so will go have a nose at that :)

Thank you very much for all your trouble..

I been reading these comments for hours, and tried some fixes....useless. Why can't someone just come up with a version that works for someone who just wants to use his computer and not someone who wants to go on an I.T. course. This will only work if you deselect 'any other packets', which was supposed to have been fixed by previous versions. All these supposed remedies are just groping in the dark.....at least there should be some proper instructions on how to set it up. I would still thank PC Tools for trying , but for me it just don't work. For the users where it did work....the question is 'Why on yours but not mine?
It's back to Vista's own useless version, and fingers crossed.

I've never had so much trouble trying to get a firewall to work. All I can say now is I'm glad I didn't buy it!

Time to uninstall, leave a trail so I'll get wind of it if a resolution comes along, then move on to other things.

hello guys!
ive installed ver.25 today and couldnt connect while the firewall was active. i fixed that by "allowing application windows explorer" (which i had blocked 8), but connecting took - no still takes - a long time...

after reading a bit, i decided to right-click-allow some udp and tcp traffic which i found from the logs, because IE didnt work, also my antivirus wouldnt update...

if anyone could >please tell me whether all the evil bad men from the internet are secretely watching my porn right now or can launch the next dos from here...

the rules
ALLOW
UDP: (ports) 53, 137, 1027, 5355, 65534
TCP: 80, 8080

and well... everything works out fine!

Just to muddy the waters even more, I have the same problem using Windows XP Home edition. I downloaded PCTFW, installed it, and could not connect to the internet. I am running a DSL connection from the DSL modem through a router to three comps. The other two comps had no connection issues during the time I installed the FW.

I had SpywareDoctor with Antivirus installed BEFORE the firewall installation. No connection issues UNTIL I installed the firewall. With just SDAV, no problems. Even with Comodo Personal Firewall running.

I will download the latest fix file from here and try a re-install tomorrow to see if it works.

I had a similar problem connecting.

Because it took a while for my activation code (to download from this forum) to arrive I completly remove the firewall from my system (including registry cleaning)
I reinstalled it an carefully examend and replied all questions the firewall asked.
and ..............
It worked, apperently I was to quick in answering (and blocking) during my first installation.
Since I was used to work with a discrete firewall (sygate) and since then never reinstalled another one i was unprepared for the first (essential) popup questions

Perhaps some directions added in the installation procedure or a link to the online help can prevent this

I had to add "Internet Explorer" under "Applications" in the "PCTools Firewall" with either "Full Access" or "Special Permissions" You may have to browse where is at. Most of the time is in "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe" I hope that helps.

I began having problems accessing the internet on Thursday, 7/10/08. Since many posters seem to have had these problems long before this, my post probably won't help them. However, I discovered that MS security update KB951748 is causing a conflict with not only PC Tools Firewall Plus but also for those using Zone Alarm. I contacted MS via email at the update website and received a reply advising the removal of this update until such time as a patch was offered.

My OS is WinXP on Dell Dimension C521. Uninstall instructions per MS:
1. Click on Start, then Control Panel
2. Click on Add and Remove Programs
3. Check the box Show Updates
4. Search for KB951748
5. Select the update and click on Uninstall
6. If you are prompted for Administrator Password, please enter it to complete the process.

Also make sure you do not download the security update again until MS releases a patch to resolve this conflict.

I uninstalled the update and am now able to access the internet w/o disabling PC Tools Firewall Plus.

Hope this will help someone.

There is no problem with accessing Internet after KB951748... All what you need is allow svchost.exe's DNS requests from local ports 49152-65535.

I installed the firewall with PC tools spyware doctor plus anti-virus(shut all programs down before installing). It froze my computer completely. I could move my wacom mouse around, but I could not click any icons. I had to hard shut it off and go into safe mode to uninstall it. I love Spyware Doctor with AV. I look forward to trying a firewall from PC tools with an easier set up.

I was unable to connect to the net after installing the latest version of pctools firewall. After trying all the possible solutions I could find (and after many wasted hours), I uninstalled pctools along with Avast, Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. I then rebooted, reinstalled pctools, then Avast, and then the others (rebooting as requested).

Finally all was good. I hope this saves others some time, frustration and hair.

I suspect it was Avast that was the problem, though I had had all living in harmony previously, so I knew it could be done. I'm using XP Home, by the way.

Hi All

I am having this problem, of not being able to get on line unless I turn the firewall off!!! In frustration I thought I would uninstall it. And guess what. It will not uninstall. Not even with the uninstaller with it in the programme list or with Windows uninstaller tool. Now it looks like I am left with a piece of junk that I cannot get rid of and only think it does is stop me getting on line. Reading the posts it looks as if PC Tools have done nothing to resolve this problem.
If I have it wrong let me know, because it looks as if we are getting a pi** poor service from PC Tools

Try connecting to the internet and then enabling the firewall while you're connected. That fixed the problem when I experienced it.

My advice is to clear the history and then try to connect to the internet, you should be able to see which packets are being blocked. Then go to advance rules and allow them in. Keep doing this until you have a connection. For me this took 2 additional rules and the firewall is working fine with my connection now.

My Firewall Plus (Version 5) ceased to connect to the internet after I upgraded Spyware Doctor with Antivirus to version "2010".
Examining the detail I found the PC was not being allocated an IP address.
(Sorry, I am running XP).

I did the 2010 upgrade on three of my PCs and the same thing occurred on each machine despite them being on separate ISP services.

So I disabled FW+ and enabled Windoze's own firewall.

Today I decided to be more proactive and did some more examining.
I launced FW+ again and as expected could not connect to the internet unless I turned Protection Off - hardly a good thing.

I think I tried every solution offered in this thread - still no internet connection.
What I did discover is there is a Version 6 (I am running 5) in the Help listings, but there is no evidence of this in the product downloads; in fact, this product appears no longer to be offered (click on Upgrade Now in the free version and the offering is a totally different product).

HERE IS A SOLUTION THAT WORKS FOR VERSION 5

Click on Setings; turn off 'Packet filering enabled'
