View Full Version : No home network access with firewall enabled

I've searched these forums, found few hits, but none of them solved this problem.

As soon as I turn off this firewall, I can see both computers on my home network. While the firewall is enabled, there is no chance to see them or access them.

I followed few advices and added my adapter to trusted zone. I also set some advanced rules but to no avail... still no luck.

If anyone could help by posting what exactly needs to be done to set those rules, I would greatly appreciate it. If possible, step by step...

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I am behind a Linksys router/firewall. Two computers on my home network.

I have had the same problem and reported it but it has not been resolved. I will dump the product soon if it is not fixed.

Well, I don't want to give up on this product that quick, but sure some assistance from developers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Could you make the following test?
1. Make sure all adapters are in the 'Allow all traffic' zone
2. Test if you can see the computer

If you can see the computer it is a simple problem (not a BUG) and you are missing a rule. We can help you from there.

If you still have problem it is probably a BUG and we will take it from there and try to help you guys.
Please tell me if changing to 'Allow all traffic' zone helped.
In order to do this please follow these steps:

1. Go to Settings->Adapters
2. Change all Adapter to the 'Allow all traffic' zone and press on apply
3. Restart your computer.

Hi hdavid and thank you for your respond !

YEs I can see both of my computers on my network when all adapters are set to ALLOW ALL TRAFFIC. But doesn't that mean, that firewall is not protecting any traffic through those adapters at all ? It's like we are disabling the firewall completely, am I right ?

So, I guess we need some rules to be set in order for our network to work properly... If you can lead us through the whole process, but step by step please, that would be great. I tried doing it myself and had no success...

Cheers!

P.S. I've noticed another little thing... not sure if it's just on my end or some other people noticed it too...

When Smart Update kicks in, I get some window where I'm suppose to tick/untick those updates that I don't need, like for example Chinese Simplified Language File, Deutsch, Russian etc...

There is no way to untick those boxes, therefore they all stay checked. Is it how it suppose to be ? I don't believe that's the case, so you may want to take a look at it and see why is that happening.

Thanks again !

Let's start with Smart Update. Te reason we have not let user untick the language file is because of current limitation of out Smart Update program. For each language we have language file and Quick Start guide file. If you download the language file for Russian for example and not the Quick Start guide file Russian and then switch to Russian then when you would like to get the Quick Start guide you will get error. We can not yet link between files in the Smart Update view (meaning if you untick one file another one will be unticked) so we have decided not to let the users the choice. The size of the files is really insignificant so you should not worry about it.

Regarding the ’Allow all traffic’: The reason I wanted you to do it is because I wanted to know if it is BUG or just missing rules. Now since we know it is just rules we can try to analyze what you are missing. I need to understand your home network configuration. Your computers are connected to each user using specific adapter (you can see the list of your adapters in the firewall settings->Adapters). You will need to set both adapters to trusted zone. Then I would look and the Logs page and see the packets that are blocked. Each packet gives you the information you need (Ethernet type, Protocol etc). Creating the rules that allows this traffic will probably sort out your problem.

What I would suggest to do if it a bit too techi is to take screen each log that is different then others (you might have several logs of several packets that were blocked all with the same protocol, Ethernet type etc) and send it to us. We can create a rule file for you that you can import and solve your problem. Anyway don’t leave your computer in ‘Allow all Traffic’ zone, this defeat the purpose of the firewall

Ok, thanks for the respond hdavid !

Regarding the Smart Update... I understood everything, thanks for the explanation. Still, I believe it would be good to completely remove those checkboxes, or at least grey them out so people know that they are not editable... this way, it looks like there is a bug or something. Everything points users to check/uncheck those options, and nothing is clickable... there is also a note: "Please select the updaes you want to install and then click next"... there is no point in having it if it's not going to be clickable for a long period of time. It's just kind of confusing IMHO.

Anyway, regarding the network and not being able to access my networked computers... I am at work right now, so unable to check anything right now. When I get home, I will give it a try and let you know what happened.

Yes, I am connected through my Linksys router. One computer is desktop PC, and another one laptop, each one connected to separate slot inside my router (4 slots in total, 2 occupied). I installed this firewall on both of my computers.

With Comodo Firewall I had similar problems, but I managed to configure those rules in less than 5 minutes and everything was working without a glitch. I was just surpised that same rules didn't apply here...

I will give it a try and let you know... thanks again !

Can you post the rule that is still blocking 137 and 138.

Also here is a snippet that may help.

At minimum, you will need to open port 139; for browsing services, etc, it may be that you need to open ports 135-139 and port 443.

Yes I'll do that as soon as I get home. Thanks again!

@Cat5e - I'd appreciate if you open your own thread, so this thread I started can go uninterrupted. That's how it usually goes in forums. Anyone who is interested to see how this problem can be solved, can easily follow the flow. If we start asking many questions, this will get so confusing for anyone who is searching for the asnwer to the question from my initial post. Thanks in advance!

If you need a rule that will allow ports 137 and 138 go to the Trusted Zone and choose the rule 'Allow NetBIOS'. This is the rule for that. You can look at the details and do the same for Internet Zone or just set the adapter to the trusted zone (Settings-Adapters)

I have posted an easy to follow, step by step setup for a rule. And our setups are the same, except maybe that I am using a Static IP setup and I don't know if you are or not. Anyway, look for the thread: "How to Easily Fix LAN Access". The example uses V6, which has now been released.
