Have had some software issues, I decided to run Registry Mechanic (6.0) and check for any errors (I also did a smart-update to make sure it had latest updates)

If found no issues

At this point a quick "google" yielded several other registry cleaners

C-Cleaner found 10 errors
RegCure found 1130 errors

I reviewed a lot of these errors and they were correct (eg entries for software which no longer existed on disc, for which registry keys were still present, invalid file types etc)

The question is ... Why cant Registry Mechanic detect these and handle them !

Hi PJWilkin,

Could you please send us your log files and we will analyze this further. To send us your log files, please see below:

1. Start Registry Mechanic and complete a full scan (please do not complete a repair).

2. Close Registry Mechanic.

3. Navigate to the "\Program Files\Registry Mechanic\Log" and "\Program Files\Registry Mechanic\Data" folder and attach all the files in the "\Log" and "Data" directory.

4. You may want to compress them using zip or rar as they can be rather large.

5. I will PM you my email address. Can you please attach the log file and send to that email address.

HI

After reading your post I was curious so I downloaded RegCure to see what happens on my computer.

First I ran Registry Mechanic and fixed all errors, there were 26.

Then I ran RegCure, it found 800+.

I took the time to go through the list, and about half were empty registry entries, but many of the other I could recognize as valid registry changes that related to programs and files that I have deleted moved or uninstalled recently.

Registry Mechanic didn’t find these, maybe it’s time for that program update!

Anyway, it’s interesting; I always felt that RM was doing a thorough job.

Mike

Hi PJWilkin & Mike,

Thanks for the log file PJWilkin.

We cannot comment on the specific scanning capabilities of competing registry maintenance utilities. However, the scanning algorithms of Registry Mechanic and our competing products are set to different sensitivities.

For example, our competitors might identify a registry key as an error, and Registry Mechanic might identify that key as being valid an possibly necessary to operate a program on your PC. Registry Mechanic will take a cautious view and pass the key as valid, as removing the key may cause instability within that program, or within the operating system.

Please rest assured that the scanning functions of Registry Mechanic are very thorough, and each key is examined for validity and relevance within your registry file. However, if there is a possibility that removing the key could create instability, Registry Mechanic takes a less-aggressive approach to removing the key.

Important Additional information:
=================================

Registry Mechanic default is to scan Specific paths however it can broaden the range to scan other drivers and paths on users command.

Please note that Registry Mechanic does not count the empty branches in the result where most of our competitors do to get a higher result. Registry Mechanic will additionally repair more things that it identifies (empty branches) without showing in the results which lead to less entries found.

Example #2, We omit a product "A" in our Large Ignore White List, might find on a specific machine 300 items which are valid errors, but we omitted it to stop conflicts between products, where others don't.

Scans and results vary from machine to machine so the scanning paths to select c:\ the main drive in RM->Settings->Scanning Paths.
