Hi All,
I have just been informed that the latest Smart Update for PCTAV causes the error 103.
As a workaround, could you please:
1. Uninstall PCTAV
2. Re-install PCTAV
3. Do NOT perform a Smart Update.
We apologize for the inconvenience. The developers are currently working on resolving this issue. Once this is fixed, I will let you know.

Has anything been done about this error? I've un-installed the antivirus program and now it's gone - I don't have a backup copy. Can I download another copy with my license?

The PCTAV developers are currently working on this problem. This should be resolved shortly.
You can download PCTAV from www.pctools.com/anti-virus/download/
If you have already registered, theres not need to re-enter your license code. Please do NOT perform a Smart Update until this issue has been resolved.

On one PC with PCTAV I have not updated since 27/02/2007. Now I'm being offered an update via Smart Update which includes database files 015, 016, 018, a daily update and an .XML file (no 017). Because there is no release time/date info available either within Smart Update or on the PC Tools website, I have no way of knowing whether this update causes or resolves the Error 103 problem.
Also, Anthony's well-meaning instruction:
"As a workaround, could you please:
1. Uninstall PCTAV
2. Re-install PCTAV
3. Do NOT perform a Smart Update."
is dangerous if the PCTAV installation package is the same as it was when released on 22/12/2006. The virus definitions will be well out of date by now.
Also, I've seen the aforementioned Microsoft C++ error (see attachment)on 2 different PCs today. In each case PCTAV seemed to restart okay after closing.

 this is the fourth or fifth time i have the 103, and have to go to the process of deinstalling and reinstalling
How can a company make so many mistakes, how about testing your product before letting it out?
Although i still have 6 months to go I won't bother to reinstall this after I removed it, i will buy a working piece of antivirus software. I know i don't have to complain with PC Tools, because they won't refund money.
How did this product ever got the stars and reviews it advertises with?
Good luck to all the other customers.

Unfortunately, there was an issue with the latest PC Tools Antivirus Smart Update which had caused the 'error 103' error message.
This issue has since been resolved on our Smart Update servers. However, you will need to perform the following steps to obtain the fix.
Please note: This fix will only work for those that received the error after a Smart Update was performed.
Please complete the steps below to reinstall PC Tools Antivirus. Once reinstalled, perform a Smart Update which will resolve the problem.
1. Download PC Tools Antivirus from the link below:
http://www.pctools.com/downloads/avinstall.exe
2. Ensure that PC Tools Antivirus is not running by going to Task Manager (press Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys) and ending the PC Tools Antivirus processes (pctavsvc.exe & pctav.exe)
3. Reinstall PC Tools Antivirus downloaded from step 1
4. Once installed, perform a Smart Update which will resolve the problem

Interesting posts, folks, thanks. I took the time waiting for errors, hanging PCs, numerous reboots and scratching hard drives to sketch out my Apple Mac purchase. It will cost a few bucks, but much less than the value of the time I waste on my Microsoft, Windows and parasytic thrid-party suppliers who I have to pay to cover, fix or as best we can mitigate the hopeless product The Richest Man In The World has foisted on us.

It looks like this thread dates back to February 2007....I have this problem as of yesterday. If this was a bad update in the servers how did I get it now come June?
I went through a security patch update for XP SP2 and this all started, So I can only assume that my services were somehow hindered by the Windows update.
Is this still in fact a PC Tools problem or has it evolved into something more?

Hi Pyper70,
To resolve this issue, could you please uninstall/re-install PCTAV.
1. Exit PCTAV (rightclick on the icon in the system tray and select exit)
2. Go to Start-> Programs-> PC Tools AntiVirus-> Uninstall PC Tools AntiVirus
3. Check if c:\Program Files\PC Tools AntiVirus does not exist, if it does delete this.
4. Visit: http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/ download the setup file and re-install. You do not need to re-enter your license details.
Let me know if you are still having problems with this.
