Hi,
I recently backed up my files which were in the XP user documents folder onto a n external harddrive, then i reformatted the disc and attempted to restore the files. I now can't copy/read some files as im getting "access denied" when i try to read files. I tried adjusting the permissions to allow the current user to have full access, but even after enablingt that i still get the "access denied " message.. Can someone help me please.
Cheers
Jay

Thanks for contacting PC Tools.
Regarding the "access denied" messages when trying to copy files over.
Please note that File Recover is not able to 'reset/restore' file permissions. It seems that something may have happened to the characteristics of the files when you backed them up onto the external drive.
File Recover has been designed to recover the remaining data on your hard disk. However, File Recover is not designed to repair the content of files. It is important to know the difference so you understand what File Recover does.
For more detailed information on File Recover please go to: http://www.pctools.com/file-recover/

When you originally setup the user account in XP a long time ago you selected to make your files "Private". That option just makes it so other users can't access your files.
To fix it:

You can also convert the drive to FAT32, which will get rid of permissions, but I'd only use it if you've tried everything else. If you have to go that route, you'll have to use a partition software such as PartitionMagic (http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html) (Windows won't go from NTFS down to FAT32).

you should get back the owner rights for accessing files by going to properties of that folder......

You got it !!
I used "Windows XP restore", to backup all my music to from C:\ to an external drive. Then I reinstalled ("fresh/new" install of XP) to C:\ .
When I tried to restore the music from the external drive back to C:\, I got the "access denied" :( message. Using your instructions I now have access to all of the files again!!
Thank you kets25!!:)

try editing the security attribute of your folder. Make sure that your account has full access and ownership of the folder.
I think that will do it.
