Hello All,

just thought I would try the new beta version,

running with Windows XP SP2 , Norton AV 2007 and Norton Personal Firewall 2006.

I cannot get SD 5.0.0.160 to update at all. All I get is Update Failed message. The new version of Reg Mech updates fine.

There is a Firewall rule for SD and its allowed, have I missed something?

Also the scan seems slower than SD 4, Before I un-install and go back to version 4, just thought to ask in case any one has a fix or has had the same problem?

many thanks,

Steve(spt)

Hi Steve,

This is a known issue, where Norton does not allow SDv5 to perform Smart Updates. We are currently waiting for a resolution from Symantec.

For an update on the status, please visit: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44951

Could you please temporarily disable Norton AV 2007 and Norton Personal Firewall 2006 to see if you are able to perform the Smart Update, this is to test if it is related to the known issue and not a new issue.

This would be greatly appreciated.

Ok he is my latest test.. Re-installed Beta 5.0.0.160 , disabled Norton Personal Firewall 2006.

Clicked the smart update, and SD updated to Beta Version 5.0.0.161 - with the Antivirus engine.

so the update works fine with Northon Antivirus 2007 on and Norton Personal Firewall 2006 disabled.

Note: internet connection is via AOL UK with a netgear router, but not using the aol software.

next, after the update, re-enabled the firewall and started SD to do a scan, at the same time working with AceHTML editor and IE7 open.

CPU load between 48% - 100%

Ram on system 1.5gig type PC3200
CPU AMD 3200+ @ 2.19Ghz

scan seems slow, but that just might be this system.

Hope thats of some use?

Thanks for all the info Steve.

Very useful information.

The CPU usage is still currently being worked on.

We will have these fixes shortly.

Have a great day!!! :)

I've also had a variety of problems with NIS 2006.
The best way that I've found was to disable NIS, install Beta 7 , run updates until complete (now updated to 161), then reboot and take it from there.
Problems that I had before I did this were:
- Couldn't connect for updates
- Repetetive 'Spyware Doctor needs a reboot' even though updates were completed prior to the last reboot
- Repeated updates of Kernel Com Driver and System Filter driver, implying that the updates didn't install

I've think I've noticed different behaviour when I tried it on XP Home instead of XP Professional, but there were so many issues flying around I haven't got a clear picture on that.

I've also seen a problem where scrolling down a web page causes a page refresh, which stopped when Spyware Doctor was disabled.

I've also just had one where the PC couldn't browse web pages unless NIS was disabled. I disabled SD beta 7, and the problem still existed. I rebooted, and everything was OK. I reenbled SDB7 - and everything is still ok! No logic, as with most PC problems!

Hi searingk,

1. Norton blocking the updates - still awaiting confirmation from Symantec. To check the status, please see: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44951.

2 & 3. This should be resolved shortly. The developers are currently working on this.

Appreciate the information. :)

I might have a little more information. I updated from NIS2006 to 2007 using the free upgrade for subscribers option. Apart from the ever present cpu problem SWD updated without error for a couple of days until I ran the Norton 2007 add-ons pack. Since running that I am back to the same problem.

Re the cpu problem there was a suggestion on another forum that turning off the "Run quick scan whenever updates are received" in "Virus and spware protection options" will go some way to aleviate this.

Which Beta version are you now running?
I just ask because updates are now only available for v168 and higher

I had a lit of problems with norton, in fact the only way I could get rid of it was to completely reformat the C: drive and reinstall everything. Following that I went to AVAST antivirus which has proved OK without the Norton issues, also its free for home users, all you have to do is register to get the updates. However since the new SD has antivirus I've switched to that which also seems to perform well
