I am new to this forum, but have been a Spyware Dr. customer for at least 2 years now. I have repeatedly experienced the 100% CPU utilization (bug?) for quite a while. When I tried to request support, I got that too familiar "Must be your problem diagnosis!". I am -14 days overdue, but have had some serious reservations about renewing my license. It appears in this forum that Anthony has admitted this is a problem "and we're working on a solution".
My problem definition: swdoctor.exe will randomly execute, using 100% CPU utilization for up to 5 minutes. This always happens after a cold boot, during startup, preventing anything else from running. Sometimes I must End Process to get on with using my PC.
Let me explain a similar problem that has happened since mid-week with my Netscape 8 browser. It also jumped to 100% CPU utilization (must have given Spyware a real run for resources ;) ) and drove diehard Netscape users crazy around the world. The Netscape similar user forum has logged over 150 messages and here's what we discovered. It appears that Netscape gather statistics to a specific host server that did not appear to be responding, so this would tie up our computers for 2 minutes, release the resources, but less than a minute later, jump to 100% utilization. Not exactly what we want eh?
Does PCTools do something similar, hoging our PC's CPU resources, preventing anything else from working - essential freezing our overpowered PCs and frustrating the heck out of me? Many years ago I was an applications developer and would never design an app that would consume all system resources. At first I thought this was just poor programming on Spyware's part, but with the similar Netscape problem, I wonder if this is a similar symptom?
Until Netscape fixes their problem, there is a temporary local fix. In the system HOSTS file, any references to the offending server are essentially redirected back to our own PC, like this:
127.0.0.1 ns8-stats.netscape.com # block netscape stats
This does still cause a momentary 100% CPU utilization, but is easier to live with.
If you're still with me;
1. does Spyware Dr. do anything similar, when the CPU jumps to 100%
2. when will this be fixed (BETA is not a solution)
3. should I renew my subscription or start looking for alternative products?
Hence my subject line "Renew or Not to Renew - That's the Question"
Thanks for any feedback or suggestions.
Best regards.... Cam
