View Full Version : BETA 5 Problems

My experience so far of the various Beta releases:
Beta 2 was very positive, much faster start up, scans & updates than with SD4.
OK so Firefox and IE7 programmes were a little slow to load, but once loaded no problems surfing as pages seemed to download quickly.

I was unable to use Beta 3 as it was not possible to turn off E mail guard and hence with it installed I was unable to download mail.

Beta 4 seems an improvement on Beta 2 at least as far the loading of Thunderbird, Firefox and IE7 are concerned - at least on my PC.

Beta 5 - Oh dear what a disappointment!
The intelliscan in Beta 5 was taking more than twice as long compared to Beta 4.
Whilst Firefox itself would load OK, when downloading content CPU usage would increase to 100% and stay there for long periods making surfing a frustrating experience.
Even worse with IE7 where I had the programme crash on a couple of occasions with more than 1 tab open.
So I've removed Beta 5, reinstalled Beta 4 and all seems well once more.

Hi Saxel,

Thank you for your feedback and overview of the progress we've made in a very short period in the lead up to public release of the new Spyware Doctor.

As this was only released 12 hours ago, we're still evaluating the performance of this beta version so when it is finally released the quirks you've described should not exist.

Sincerely,

Rereading my post this morning let me say I did not mean to be critical of PC Tools SD5 Beta is so much better in many ways than SD4 and certainly good progress has been made.
I was surprised and yes disappointed when I installed the Beta 5 to suffer the 100% CPU usage issue which brought my system to a near standstill, particularly as Beta 4 seems to perform so well, very little impact upon time to load programmes or download pages.
The other difference I notice during the installation of Beta 5 was its insistence after the initial update which it performs at the end of install that the system must be rebooted - but this was only an incremental database update so I found it strange.
I do wonder because if this if the installation was not 100% correct.

Still I will continue to enjoy Beta 4 (without AV plug in) for the present it works so well on my PC
in conjunction with F-Secure ISS ! :)

Hi Saxel,

Please to see you enjoy using Spyware Doctor :)

Incremental smart update & rebooting - We could not reproduce the rebooting after an update. Could you try uninstalling the your version of Spyware Doctor completely and also going into C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor and removing this folder after the uninstall before you re-install Spyware Doctor.

Could you let me know how you go with this and I will follow this up if you are still having problems with the updates.

The problem is at least reproducible.
I shutdown and uninstalled SWD5 beta 4 and checked the SWD folder had been removed during the uninstall.
After a reboot I installed SWD beta 5 from a fresh download.
It performed a smart update and a scan after which once more I received a message to reboot to complete the installation.
Rebooted and opened firefox browser. after a few seconds CPU usage rose tp 100% - swdsvc.exe stayed on 100% until I managed to close the browser which had crashed.
Waited until CPU usage fell to zero, restarted Firefox, once more CPU usage hit 100% and Firefox crashed.

Uninstalled Beta 5, reinstalled Beta 4 and all is well once more - no instructions to reboot after the installation and no problems - so far - browsing the internet.
I see that NOD32 have also reported Beta 5 crashed their PC on installation so this in not a 1 off incident.

I run SWD beta 5 without AV add in and F-Secure ISS.

I can't seem to find my original post complaining about the slow downloads using the Beta version. I just wanted to say that with the latest build the problems have gone away. It is no better than version 4.http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8399/thumbsup4kk.gif

It is no better than version 4.

Do you mean it is now better? :)

I use F-Secure ISS. Should I upgrade to v5.0 now or wait till the conflict is resolved?

Hi Fred Bear,

The issue with SD conflicting with F-Secure is still currently being worked on. Once this has been resolved, I will update the Reported issues thread: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44951.

In the meantime, please continue to use SDv4 until the fix has been implemented.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

I am using F-Secure, Firefox and Thunderbird and SDv4.1. Is it safe to install SDv5 yet?

There have been alot of changes and progress made to SDv5 in the past few months. Probably download SDv5 and see how it goes - www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/. I haven't heard of any problems with the apps you mention.
